how often do you buy schwag

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

how often do you buy schwag

I'm curious how often people buy bike components; not clothing, accessories and consumables like tyres, chain, cassette.

Some people here seem to constantly have opinions and/or are knowledgeable about each year's new models. I've bought stuff for building up a new frame and modernising an old bike. It takes years for stuff to break (nothing I have has broken) so unless I get the itch to get another bike it's going to be years before I get new components. Do people change seatpost, stem, handlebar, fork etc frequently?

where i come from, schwag has a completely different meaning haha

that aside, i probably dont save a whole lot biking instead of driving. its a hobby and a money sink. i upgrade things as they break or as i see fit, but its not an every year thing.

mainly i replace tires, tubes, grips, brake pads, and chains fairly regularly.

no doubt biking has cost me more than I've saved not driving. It's not even close. I buy things every now and then, but usually surf ebay and buy/sell not too far from the break even point. I still think clothing and tires can be schwag, but maybe that's just me.

Clothing and tyres can definitely be schwagtastic! I get stuff when I have convinced myself that I "need" it usually. That means 1) I can afford it and 2) that there's no good reason not to.

I would say once a year. Always seems to be around this time: maybe because I'm not occupied as much outside on my bike???

Last year was a brand new bike ($2k). This year it's a edge 305, sidi shoes and toupe saddle ($350 toal). I'm pretty sure tires, cables, gas and race fees will end up costing me more though.

How often?

I buy stuff when the need arise only. Which is all the time and without need really!

You WIN schwag, or the ride organizers hand it out at the events ... you don't buy it.

You get SWAG. **** We All Get.

The term has been used incorrectly here forever.

It is what it is.

I buy a lot of bike stuff in the winter. The more I race the less I buy. It just works that way. I spend the time and energy I would spend shopping on looking up results, reviewing race flyers, putting together plans, reviewing training...recovering.

Most of us have a lot of knowledge about the latest and greatest because we've seen the stuff first hand, ride with someone who rides on it, and/or if you're like me you work on a lot of different people's bikes and just end up coming across just about everything at some time or another.

This. I buy a bunch of crap at the beginning of the year and then don't get much during the year, unless to replace something worn. Last year during the season I bought mostly food, race entries, gas and hotel rooms.
