Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I picked up a new jersey and pair of shorts yesterday ... both Fox brand. Rowan picked up a whole bunch of spokes in order to build me a couple wheels and I think there's a wheel or two for him in the works too. We've already got the rims and hubs, so I think he's set to go.

Here's the new jersey ... not that I can wear it outside just now because it is way too chilly here, but I think it will be a lovely jersey in summer ...

This is the helmet I ended up getting (Specialized Max). I ordered it last week because my local bike shop didn't have any adult XL helmets in stock that fit my budget. It was delivered to the store on Thursday but I've been out of town so I couldn't get it until Saturday evening.

It fits great! I've never really had a helmet that is actually the right size for my dome.

Rowan picked up a frame that looks similar to that from the tip, and he's talking about fixing it up for me. I've wanted a "town" bicycle for a while ... something I can ride around town, running errands or just cruising. He's thinking about doing it up as a 3-speed ... and of course it will have a basket.

Bunch of random stuff I needed: degreaser, lube, grease.

Plus some ultegra pedals and white fizik tape for the bike coming in next month.

Yokozuna cable set - that will hopefully improve the shift timing/shifter feel on my 6700 group
Shimano cleats
Tubes galore - had three bad specialized tubes (all blew out at the seam around the valve stem within 15 minutes of each other) so I returned the others I had and bought a bunch of Bontrager ones. Not one problem since
Bontrager CO2/pump
Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard jersey
Pearl Izumi Elite shorts - sooooo much better than their attack shorts. should have switched a while ago.

Hmmm, I'm going to have to try some on again. I've got Quest shorts, and I tried on Attacks and Elites at an REI a few weeks ago. I thought the Attacks definitely felt better than the Quests, but the first impression I got from the Elites was terrible--the fabric felt hard and scratchy. I've tried on PROs and loved them, but $130 for shorts?

I think that it is the stitching in the paneling that you might have been feeling. The Elites are nice, great bang for the buck, but once you get into that $125+ range you start moving in into midrange Giordana and Castelli bibs, which, IMO are better. PI is still good, but not what they were pre-shimano, IMO.

I picked up some Giordana Lasers ($180) a couple of weeks ago after returning the PIs, and want to buy a couple more. I still can't pop for Assos yet.

I ordered a trunk bag and an Avenir Universal XL rear rack. The bag is off of eBay and the rack is from Amazon. I just signed up for Amazon Prime (free to college students for a year!), which allows qualifying purchases to be shipped with free 2 day shipping. They also offer 1 day shipping for $3.99 per item. It's a killer deal. It saved me about $12 on expedited shipping on the rack, which is nice. I'll need the bag and rack to hold water bottles this weekend. My brother is coming to town and we're going to hit some of the trails in the area.

It ended up costing about $45 for the set. It doesn't seem too bad. Hopefully the rack will mount easily to by bike.

i normally wear medium US fit stuff/L euro fit, but i got the jacket in a L and the bibs in a M and they are a perfect fit. the jacket is just a TOUCH loose, but that's ok since i'll be layering in the winter anyway.

btw... there's no chamois in the tights.
