Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I picked up a set/pair of T2 Bontrager 700X25 tires today (about $25 each).

They're for a bike I call my daily rider... but I don't ride it in foul/winter weather. I've gathered all new consumables for it... although the chain doesn't show any wear... so I won't be replacing it. But new tires, brake pads, and handlebar tape on my scrubbed spotlessly clean bike and it will wait for the weather to break... in the spring.

Meanwhile... I've already switched to my rain/winter bike.

Sounds fun, I like the maintenance part almost as much as the riding part, wish I had my rain bike still.

I also love wrenching. I call wrenching my hobby within my (cycling) hobby. I'll have my daily rider back to new condition before the holidays. And by then or shortly after.... I should find a Craigslist "project bike".

I always try to find a bike I'd like to own anyway. Then I'll restore it over the cold winter. I keep a vintage steel bike... and I like the one I have now. But the right restored project bike... could cause a rotation. Either way... come spring or early summer I'll sell one bicycle to be back to "N" (rule 12).

I am not a flipper and I don't actually profit. But I think my efforts probability covers all my bicycle and parts costs.

Just picked these up. Wow, they were a pretty penny, but I haven't bought shoes in probably 8 years or so (once you find a pair you like, you stick with them!). Hope these are a good investment! Haven't had a chance to ride with them yet, but the color is so badass!

More winter goodies! Gore Phantom 2.0 Windstopper Jacket, which I got on sale for $85, and a Sugoi Winter Cycling Hat. I'm impressed with the jacket. It feels great, and it seems really well made. The color also looks ten times better in person.

Had my eye out for this 2014 7.6 FX for almost a year now:

In this economy, though, the cashflow just didn't seem to want to work out. But when one of the guys at the local dealer called me up this morning to tell me that they were hit with a surprise December sale, and that my 7.6 is now at 25% off, I knew I had to go see a friend, and he came through like a champ. He knows I'm good for it, though; we used to be coworkers, and now I do a lot of freelance work for the same company.

^^Yeah, very interesting location choice to photograph a bike. This is America, any garage door will suffice.

You know what? Own it. Dress that 7.6 FX up for holidays and leave it there. Nice centerpiece, er, bike!

Received and installed my Hawk Racing BB30.24 bottom bracket. Finally no more creaks! I also made a little video comparing my old bearings to the new ones. I can't believe how well these things spin!

That's the chain. Old BB creaked badly, especially up hills. New BB is dead silent. Neither BB is making noise in the video.

Cool, I didn't realize solving a problem I've been having with my BB is "drinking the kool aid".

Two things: a chest X-ray to make sure I didn't fracture any ribs and a new front fork for my Trek 520.

During my Monday commute to work, my front tire got stuck in a groove. When I corrected, I slammed the front tire and impaled myself on the top 2X6 of a stockade fence. No fractured ribs, but a couple are bruised badly. I'm going to try to ride gently tomorrow for the first time.

Some cyber Monday wheels from Performance, Mavic Kyserium SE $400 pair.

A bit lighter then the 105/CXP33's I run, same price, plus comes with a set of 25mm Mavic tires.

I was holding off, delaying, hemming, hawing about a lighter set of wheels, then was asked if I would "donate" a spare rear wheel to my nephew for his b-day, whose hand-me-down wheel (on the bike I gave him), finally bit the dust with 3rd broken spoke. Nephew got a mostly new Mavic Open Pro/Ultegra/DB DT14/15 wheel. So an opportunity to buy the Kyseriums.
