Shifter broken, need replacement
 

My left 105 shifter crapped out on me. My LBS is sending it in to Shimano to see if it is under warranty. In the mean time, I am thinking that if it isn't and I have to spend money on the 105, maybe instead I should just upgrade to the Dura Ace (which is on sale at a couple online bike shops). Three things to consider, the durability, weight difference and compatibility. Are Dura Ace shifters more durable? Is the weight difference really only 63 grams? I found varying weights for both on the Web. Can I use DA shifters with my 105 drivetrain? Old shifters Shimano 105 ST-5600, new possible shifters Dura-Ace 10-Speed ST-7801 Dual Control STI Levers.

Another option, what about using SRAM shifters with my 105 drivetrain. I had Force components on my old bike, no problems. Would I have to replace the derailler too i.e. SRAM shifters/derailler and 105 everything else...would this work, how well?

The DA shifters will work with your current drive train.
You will need a SRAM derailleurs if you get SRAM shifters.

Only if you like Sram should you get Sram. I find their hood shape to be great but there are many other things about them I don't care for. And with the deals on Dura Ace 7800 right now it wouldn't hurt to get them.

Ultegra is the sweet spot in the high quality bang for the buck arena.

You'll find an upgrade is quite worth the money. Ultegra is what I ride. Dura-Ace is better. The improvements aren't in the weight, but in the mechanics. Ultegra and Dura-Ace just work better than 105.
