Used Waterford

My coworkers father has a lugged Waterford with less than 10 miles on it late 90's with shimano 600 equipped that is supposedly my size and has been garage kept. Will measure just to verify size but is asking a $1000, that seems steep for an older bike though it is new mileage wise. What do you guys think?

Find out the model. Some of the older models were made with Reynolds 753 which would make it well worth it. If you wanted to update it, you could flip the parts on the 'Bay and make back enough for the newer group.

Repost this in the Classic and Vintage forum. You may just have an offer of a pristine condition collector's item.

I bought a mint Waterford 1200 with Ultegra for $650. I know I got a good deal, but $1000 seems like a bit much.

Fat Boy 02-07-09 03:50 PM

$1000 isn't a great deal, but it isn't awful, either. If it's basically perfect, then you'd be hard pressed to find anything of that nature for less money. A new Waterford frame is $2200 and add another $350 for a fork. Granted, a Shimano 600 (Ultegra before Ultegra) groupset isn't going to get much on Ebay, but it's probably worth $250 all told.

In short, if it's the type of bike you want, then try to get it a little cheaper. Even if you can't get the price any lower, it's probably go anyway.

Thanks for the info. I will check it out.

speaking as someone with 3 road bikes, a cyclocross and a track bike...you gota ask yourself, what you will do with the bike. I have a steel bike which is a great ride, but its a good 3 pounds more than my modern road bike. I use my steel bike for lunch time training rides and short training rides. if I want to go fast up the hill, I'm not taking my steel bike.

tjayk 02-08-09 06:01 AM

i've witnessed nos shimano 600 sell for ridiculous prices...

I will not be racing just road riding. I was really looking at doing a Soma Smoothie build or maybe a new complete steel road bike this year. So this is inline with what I was looking at getting just used instead of new even though it is pretty much new. As far as it being an older drivetrain I will use it till it wears out no need to replace what's not broken. I might switch my ultegra or rival stuff off one my other bikes though.

I doubt there's any such thing as a bad Waterford frame. If this one fits and the paint is excellent, I think it's a good buy.

I'd expect it to ride at least as smooth as a Surly, regardless of tubing. Waterford really knows what they're doing.

You probably will have to wait a long time for that friction (?) Shimano 600 to wear out. I don't always like the way they work, but they do last a long time, like Campy friction stuff. If the parts are saleable, where can you lose?

Does a stamp collector ask himself what he's going to do with all his stamps?

scattered73 02-08-09 12:01 PM

The 600's are integrated shifters which is a bonus since I was really planning on doing bar ends on the smoothie build to keep cost down. I will bring my camera to work to and post a pic when he brings it up he told me the tires are pretty shot I hope they at least hold air.

55/Rad 02-08-09 01:23 PM

Many of the late 90's Waterford's were made with 853 steel, and at $1000, if it is in the kind of shape stated, I would seriously consider.

Depends on the model and the fit of course.

Sounds like he's going to ride it and not stick it in a museum.

ridethecliche 02-08-09 04:46 PM

I lost my stamp collection in middle school. I'm still sad about that. I had so much cool stuff :(

That's fine too. I don't cry when I see a rare classic car cruising down the highway, nor do I cry if it's in a museum.

Which ever bike I get it will be ridden, scratched, possibly wrecked and locked to various posts and racks. I quite often will run errands on my rides, part of the fun of lcf. Other times friends and I will do rides and stop at various places and events. Which bike I ride has to do with terrain and mood I am in. Attached photo is last weekend’s bike ride/Chinese New Year Festival I went to with friends typical of what I would put my bike through so it will not be in a museum environment that is for sure.

I'd hit it....

Can't lose with a Waterford...seems like a good price for one in that condition.

A $1,000 is a steal for that bike. You couldn't put a new one together for less than $3,000. Here's what a used one went for a day ago. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:B:WNA:US:1123

scattered73 02-09-09 09:26 AM

You guys got me all worked up I am really hoping this bike fits

dombey19 02-09-09 11:32 AM

I have a 1991 Waterford Paramount with the same gruppo on it. I sure wouldn't sell it for $1000. If this fits I would jump at it.

The reason I say this is because I bought my 1991 Waterford Paramount (Campy) for $525. I considered that a smokin' deal. If you put a new Waterford together, you're right, you couldn't do it for $3k. It'd be closer to $5k.

Comparing a Waterford to a Surly is a something like comparing a high end Mercedes to a Chevy. A Surly isn't a particularly bad bike, but a Waterford is a particularly nice one.

BengeBoy 02-12-09 12:14 PM

buy it.

I have a 853 steel Waterford. With a CF fork, 9 speed DA, and Ksyrium wheels, it's around 19 lbs. It's the most comfortable bike I have for rides like centuries and that includes a custom Ti. It's as fast as any bike in all conditions except perhaps steep hills where my CF with Zipp 303s might make a slight difference.

scattered73 02-12-09 02:42 PM

Still waiting on the boss to bring the bike by work
