Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

recomend these road pedals? w/pics

I need a pair of clipless pedals. Found these for 48 bucks (Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Pedal); good deal? I don't know alot about pedals, are they good? should i be getting something else? Trying to stay in the 40-80 dollar range. I ride 50-100 miles a week if it matters.

You should be able to get Ultegra SPD-SLs at PBK < $80

One thing you will find out about pedals is that what one person likes another hates. I started out on Shimano SPD-SL and I hated them. I had a hard time getting in and out of them and went down hard several times. Then, I switched to Speedplay Light Action pedals and love them. I have never had a difficult time getting in and out of them. You don't even need to look, just step down and listen for the click.

Speedplay Light Action pedals are around $100.00 in Chromoly.

Here's the thing about Time pedals-they're only servicable if you send them back to Time- I recently found this out, as one of my RXS pedals (which I otherwise really like) started having bearing problems.

You can indeed send them back to the factory and have them overhauled for only 15 bucks, but unless you have an extra pair, you're SOL for the time they're gone. Also, Time does not make a tool available to the public or even bike shops to service their pedals in any way.

Because of this, I'm switching to the 105 SPD-SL.

They are good pedals. They will work faultlessly for several years. Just make sure that what you are buying includes a new set of cleats and its a good deal. If it doesn't specifically mention that new cleats are included look elsewhere.

Go with some Shimano 105's through probikekit.com. They're cheap, nicer, and all around a great pedal. I have them and love them. I wouldn't really bother spending the extra money on Ultegra. The only difference is a few grams lighter and it's a little shinier.

Just to reaffirm the above statement, I started with SPD-SL's, went to Speedplay Zero's, and can't wait to go back to my Shimano's. I didn't have any problem clipping into the Shimano's, and the fact that I have to be so careful walking on the Speedplays really annoys me.
