Garmin 305 or 705 for Valentines day?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin 305 or 705 for Valentines day?

Nothing says I love you like a new bike computer, so I'm considering getting my wife a Garmin, but I can't decide on the 305 or the 705. She wants both HR and Cadence on whichever it ends up being.

Is the 705 worth an extra $250 for the maps and color screen?

Anyone know of a good deal on either that I can get by Saturday?

I'm leaning towards the 305, because then I could get her a day at the spa to go with it.

Personally, I'd rather have a box of chocolates than a GPS... but that won't help you will it?

Get the cheaper one... a holiday invented to make Hallmark money isn't worth the extra $250 (even if it is going to Garmin and not Hallmark).

I just bought a 305 with HR and Cadence didn't want to spend the money on the 705 just to have a map display.
I can see if your actually using it to find your way around but when I ride I know were I'm going I just want the data from it so I went with the 305 how often would you really be looking at the map for navagation.
Also some place most here never look to pick up a Garmin 305 but online from Target of all places the Garmin Edge 305 GPS Biking Bundle with HR and Cadence is only $249.99 normal price $399.99 that a deal I think!!! Walmart is $260 by the way same unit.

which one is more likely to get you laid? 705 or day at the spa?

I have had both a 305 and a 705. I like the 705 much much better. The display is high Def compared to the 305. I paid $390 delivered for my 705 about three months ago. Also, I use the map feature all the time. I plan out a route on my computer and down load it to the 705. This way I can plan out a 40 mile ride and get turn by turn directions.

However, I agree buy your lady what you think she will like.

Chocolate and flowers are so trite. Nothing says I love you better than a Garmin 705 for Valentines Day.

On the other hand, if you make her mad, it may end up looking like this after it bounces off your head...

Maps are very useful if you like exploring new roads on your bike. If you don't stray very far from home, then the 705 may not be worth paying double the price.

You can get HR and cadence on cheaper computers than the 305. Is she a hard core enough about her training to make the 305's features interesting? Having to recharge the 305 every day is a significant disadvantage vs. most simpler bike computers.

That's what happened to it after I simultaneously exceeded 100mph and 2000watts.

Remember that the 305 has terrible battery life and cheapy contacts that fail. That would be enough to keep me away.

I would go for the 705 in a basket of chocolates and the day spa as well, that way all bases are covered.

I have the 305 and it does the job well. The biggest drawback is it's hard to read with polarized sunglasses on. I have used a friends 705 and its display is much better.

CastIron,

While riding fast last week, the mount holding the 705 snapped, sending the computer flying to the middle of a busy road. By the time I slowed down and turned back to retrieve the thing, several cars had gone over it. I called Garmin and told them what happened, and they sent me a new one at no charge. Those guys were terrific, I like my 705 even better now.

Thanx. I keep hearing about the cheesy mount and since mine arrived yesterday I'm going to look at augmenting the thing. Sad, it seems like such a nice, simple attachment.

Does she run or want to use it for other types of exercise? If not, I say get the 705. If she doesn't like it - just "regift" it to yourself.

Thanks guys. Your answers have been helpful. I ordered the 305 last night from Amazon overnight delivery for $265. After calculating the difference and adding the map SD card, it was just too much. Besides, if she got the 705, there would be nothing left to buy.

I think the 305 will keep her happy until Presidents day.
