Zefal HPX or Blackburn framepump

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Zefal HPX or Blackburn framepump

Just like the title says.

After WR basically "taught" me the correct way to use a frame pump, I'm going to get one.

I'm looking to figure out which sits more secure under the top tube, and which is the easiest to use.

Keep in mind, I'd go look at some, but I live in the middle of nowhere. Nearly everything I buy has to be an online purchase, or special ordered through the rather small LBS, who will charge me up front. Opinions are appreciated.

Cheers!

do you have a pump peg on your bike? (edit: if not, i found that the blackburn fit my non-pegged bike better than my zefal, but it could be that the zefal was too big, size 4)

i had a blackburn frame pump, can't remember the model, but it sucked anyway.

zefal hpx is way better - i haven't measured out how many pumps it takes to get to 100psi, but it's less than with the blackburn pump i had.

hope this helps!

I don't have a peg, but I read that the new HPX is designed to be used without one.

If there are issues, I can always make a ziptie peg.

I tried Zefal and Planet Bike pumps at the store two years ago. I forget exactly what but I broke a piece off the Zefal. The PB works fine; it gets used at least once a month on group rides.

My other bike has a Topeak that works fine too.

I haven't tried the Blackburn.

The Zefal, Blackburn, PB and Topeak pumps do not require a peg. I use a Jandd pump strap on the handle end and a rubber band on the head end. It makes it harder to take off but I prefer the security on bumpy roads.

Hadn't considered the PlanetBike one. I'm typically a fan of all things Planet Bike, but your post makes you the first person I've "known" with experience with one.

I've read someplace that the PB ones are junk. Luckily I read that after I bought mine.

A nice feature on the PB is that the handle unfolds to make a T.

Have been using Zefals since the 1980s and have the latest one on my bike now. I recommend it but can't give you a comparo.

I've used both, and now much prefer the Topeak RoadMorph.

HPX

Bombproof, repairable, reversible chuck, frame fit, full size, i.e., no mini pump crap, does what it says on the tin.

edit: this hpx - https://www.zefal.com/zefal/produit.php?key=73

Saw this pic elsewhere too- was curious, why are both cranks in the same direction? I'm sure its a stupid question but I guess till I ask, I'll never know.

my issue is probably that my (size 4) hpx pump is a bit too big for my bike w/out the peg pump, so it pops out at any chance.

good idea with the zip-tie pump peg, i'm gonna try that.

They're independent cranks with a clutch in each. That is, your trailing leg cannot rest and, at the bare minimum, must pull it's own weight up on the return stroke rather than be pushed up by the driving leg. You're forced to pedal co-ordinated circles with no dead spots and imbalance.

Zéfal doodads - I use two for that belt and braces look.

just the strap - https://www.zefal.com/zefal/produit.php?key=103

doodad + rubber block for extra support - https://www.zefal.com/zefal/produit.php?key=109

I've had both. Both work well. I prefer the Blackburn just for aesethetic purposes. Also the ability to lock out the spring on the Blackburn is a nice feature (I don't recall if the Zefal does that as well.)

Apologies for the cheeky quote edit.

That's the X function in the zéfal HP-x, i.e., locking the frame fit spring when pumping so there's no wasted energy.

Zefal, 100%. I've had a Blackburn frame pump, and it sucked.

You might see if you have room for it on your left seat stay. That worked on my Ritchey, but not on my Madone.

Had this and another Blackburn for over 3 years with no issues. I have a pump peg but with the sloping toptube, I secure each end with a velcro strap.
