Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shoe help!

I have always just used petals with toe clips, but now I want to upgrade to clip-in shoes. My only (stupid) question is, are there different locking systems on the shoes? (meaning, will only certain shoes work with certain petals?) I want to save a bit of money and buy the petals online (maybe used) but I don't want to get screwed on not having shoes that work... Thanks guys!

This is something that the search function could help you out with, but essentially there are mountain pedals/shoes and road pedals/shoes. If you get a road shoe, you will need a road pedal, and vice versa.

Most road shoes will work with most road pedals. Each pedal type has it's own special cleat, and that cleat screws onto the various holes in the bottom of the shoes. Go to your local bike shop and see them first hand. Try on some shoes and get the ones that fit the best. They should fit a bit snugly all around your foot ... not tight though, and not so loose that your foot moves front to back.

What shoes did you use with toe clips ? Real cycling shoes with cleats or sneakers ?
You may get lots of varying suggestions about brands, but with clothing & shoes, it's a much more personal thing because they have to fit your body.
