Yeah there have been times small hills feel much bigger after a hard ride, certainly smaller ones than Mount Doom.

Pcad, have you ever gone up Ash St. that goes to 9W in Piermont or South Highland going the other way to 9W? Your hill seems similar. I can understand the Mt. Doom though since it's at the end of the ride.

Ash Street is shorter but considerably steeper, the average grade of Ash has to be over 10-12%. That's a nasty little climb. The steepest climb in that area by far is Old Mountain Road, a couple of miles north of Ash Street on 9W, you make a left and go up. I think the Old Mtn Road grades exceed 20%.

Yeah, I did all those hills last Saturday, they were a **tch. They were short but a **tch. Maybe because I suck though :cry:

Ah I see. I have a couple 100 foot in ≤0.1 mile type things at the end of one my regular loops. They're not nearly as long as yours, but I like to think of the first one as my little Brynwood and the other is during my "cool down", so I usually just stand and sort of day dream my way to the top of that. The little Brynwood is hardly ever welcome though.

I took a friend of mine out on this loop one day when it was sunny. At least it was sunny before we left in shorts and fingerless gloves. After the first climb of the ride it started snowing, and our hands were so numb we couldn't brake with our fingers and had to pull back with our entire arms. By the time we got there to little Brynwood... which stares at you from a half mile straight (when there's fog you can't see the top)... it was a god awful sight.

It builds character though, doesn't it?

LOL. Mt Doom is 7% ave grade for one mile. LOL. My driveway has grades to 21%. Ask Wolfpack.

:lol: yep. that driveway has yet to be ridden by me. and the section he's talking about makes me think i would fall over backwards if i tried to climb up it. i might have to see if i can do it tho, the next time i'm up there. thing is, there's not much lead up to get any momentum since the drive is not paved all the way from the road.

ok, next time i'm up there i'll try the driveway and the one you've posted...might as well. heh...can i use the mtb for those? :)

Map My Ride is giving you AVERAGE grade. The AVERAGE grade of Mt. Doom is 6%. The steepest sections are 15-18%, one stretch like that is 300 meters long. So if the average grade of a hill is 12% (that's an extreme average grade for a climb) the steep sections might well be 20%+.
