Levi's time trial bike WATER BOTTLE?

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

Levi's time trial bike WATER BOTTLE?

Why in the heck did he have a water bottle mounted on the seat tube of his TT bike at Solvang...

Considering the fact that he is a professional cyclist and won the stage, he may have some idea what he is doing.

Probably the only time you won't see a water bottle on a TT bike is when it is a very short TT. Perhaps under five miles in length and totally flat. I have heard of the water bottle integrated into the frame tube but I don't think that this is legal.

You cannot maintain high wattage output if you get even a little bit dehydrated and at the intensities they are riding at in a TT they will loose a lot of water in a short time period.

It's better aerodynamically, I'm sure the bottle was empty. A 31 min max effort like that doesn't require water, and the aero cost of taking a drink is too high.

On the web broadcast, Frankie said that the bottle acted as a fairing to reduce turbulence around the rear wheel. He has been full of sh1t before.

On the other hand, Trek Madone bikes do come with a built in mini-fairing behind the seat tube, so maybe someone believes that stuff like this does help. I just hope that someone is an engineer and not from the marketing department.

I read on Amgen that Hincapie had a camelback on. I didn't see it personally, but I found that very Fred.

It's physically impossible for Hincapie to be a Fred, even for a second.

The Cervelo P4 TT bike is faster and more aerodynamic with the integrated water bottle. I am sure Levi's bike is also or it wouldn't have been there.

Interesting. So a bottle on the downtube is best!
