Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Way cool. Could not such a lateral motion cause many of us to crash. But, Lance is a pro.

Awesome - even though it's old it's still good to see a tool get shoved in the snow.

He wasn't the only one to get dumped to the side of the road. I saw more than a few times fans getting pushed out of the way, and rightly so, by different riders. The fan support was great, record numbers, but most of the them just didn't know how to cheer and stay the hell out of the way. It's one thing to run alongside of the racers, on the side of the road, but far too many of them were running right in the middle of the road, and running too slow. The roads were narrow enough, plus add the snow on the sides, and then the fans squeezing the racers into the middle.

And what kind of fool wears a cycling helmet and Speedo and runs in the middle of the road? Or wears a cycling kit and a helmet with elk antlers mounted on it? And the dad who held his diaper-clad baby up for the racers to see? (I imagined one of them saying, "Sorry you're dad's such an idiot, good luck growing up, kid.)

The people running out in front of the racers, costumes notwithstanding, are safety hazards that shouldn't be tolerated. I hope fans get smart(er) before next February.

If things progress as economists predict, then the recession won't hit bottom until Q2/Q3 of 2009, which means unemployment won't bottom out until Q1/Q2 of 2010. There should be plenty of people with nothing else to do except make an ass of themselves on TV.

I'm impressed. It's difficult to push a fat guy down whilst riding uphill in the group. Lance was smart - he got leverage by getting the fatboy up high.

I really thought it was going to end badly with some of those sumos; bouncing into the peloton after a face plant....

a rant by Nietzche on the matter would be more interesting.
