Avg. MPH - What Say You???

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Actually not. That's a good recipe to plateau at mediocre. And its one reason that people say tracking average mph makes average riders.

Some of my hardest workouts have the lowest average speeds, and some have the highest average speeds. It just depends on the workout. But I don't keep track of average mph in my training log because it is an unimportant variable.

I ride just fast enough to beat the rest of the group, or make them puke, which ever comes first.

IME average speed is best worked out by dividing how far I've travelled by how long it has taken me to get there.

My speed varies too. When I ride with old ladies, I am content if I can
create a light nose bleed in one or two.

45 but do atleast 42 mile rides regularly. Flat trail but depends on the time of year. Seems slower in the cold and faster in the warm months. Alone maybe 19 in the summer and 18 in the winter.

With the wife, same age she's done 18.4 at her best for the 42 and a usual of 17'ish. Maybe 16.5 if it's cold out. But she's a grandma of 6 and has only one kidney so that's good!

So if rider #1 averages 23.4 MPH and rider #2 going in the opposite direction averages 19.7 MPH, who gets to the rest stop first?

What? Every space has its own metric that allows a sense of "distance" and thus you can compute rates. Nothing overly special about Euclidean spaces except their basis vectors are really nice to work with.

Way off topic but I'm thinking of donating a kidney to a relative in the near future. My only worry is the impact that may have on cycling. I've been told contact sports are out but otherwise I should be able to resume my level of fitness. I race masters cat5 so it's not like I'm giving up a dream to wear yellow in the Tour but I'd like to maintain my usual getting about half way through a race before I'm spit out the back.

Any insight from "grandma" about strength/endurance etc?

Two or three traffic lights? What is the probability that you will actually hit and be stopped at this unknown quantity of lights. How many lanes are in the road here? Do you have to wait for the opposing direction to make left turns? Are you fighting a head wind? When did you last clean your chain....I am just going to go with the "OBFRCFCS" 27MPH.

I was just posting my opinion and experience, your mileage may vary.

I'm sure there are many many different ways of working out speed but I find the one I came up with fairly straightforward and I think accurate.
In saying that, it does fail to take into account certain factors such as Guad Circumference, bike weight and OBFRCFCS.

This average speed thing is a curious question. For a long time now I have been averaging distances of 30-35 miles. I prefer to get in as many 50 mile rides as I can but time does always permit. Of course it is still winter here in Colorado, and the sun going down does effect when and how far I can ride. But I am looking forward to spring and it feels, oh so close. In fact I think the temperature is supposed to be 65 today. If I can finish up with my chores and leave work early, I may be able to get in my first ride since December. Then again, I have really been enjoying ski season. I work at one of the local resorts as volunteer ski patrol. It's a pretty awesome job. I am going to try and work this weekend, but it's a tough call because the weather in town is supposed to be warm. I have a really difficult time jumbling all of my hobbies but the overlap in seasons is what makes it even tougher. Pretty soon the golf courses are going to open up for regular business, then there's that "project" race car that has been sitting in my garage all winter. What were we talking about again?
