Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help!! I need your input!

Hey everyone!

I purchased my road bike last summer and am looking to get a set of clipless pedals. I am looking to not spend more than $50 on them, as I am a newer rider and I do not need anything too expensive. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me.

Also, I am looking to get some cycling shoes. I am not looking to spend more than $100 on these. If anyone has any suggestions for this I would appreciate it. Would you suggest that I maybe spend a little more for a Carbon sole or is that not needed?

If you are able to help me and suggest a product, could you include a link to the product that you are referring to?

I greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

I use these pedals... Nashbar Ventoux Pedals

They work fine so far. They use the same style cleats as do LOOK pedals.

For shoes I bought some of the super cheap Northwave shoes of chainlove.com I haven't seen them on sale for a while though. They were only $27 shipped and work fine for me.

try probikekit. there are r540 pedals for under $40

shoe are a more personal thing so i suggest you visit somewhere like performance. modern plastic soles are quite stiff actually, though not as stiff as carbon. you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

I bought the Forte CR150's from Performance, because they were cheap and use the old-style Look cleats. On sale now for $49.95, and you can probably find a coupon.

I also have cheap Forte shoes, but I wish I had spent a little more on nicer shoes. Little did I know the riding thing would stick better than I thought.

Pearl Izumi Vagabonds. I have the quests and can't complain one bit.
Go with those and you'll have $110.00 left over for pedals.

Here is a reasonable deal. I use the MG-8's and they are great. The only drawback is clip on only 1 side (an for most the color). When you are riding no one will know the pedal color. On a budget it is worth looking at.

Here is a mountain bike combo. The advantage is ease of walking when off the bike. And both sides of the pedals have clips.

Do what is right for you.
