pump or co2 cartridge

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

These days I'll carry a pump if I can afford to take more time to pump up the tire and ride on less pressure; i.e. commuting, cruising, etc. For group rides I'll usually carry CO2. Also if I'm going to be out for a long time I'll take a pump and a patch kit instead of more tubes and more CO2.

co2 pump w/cartridge, tucked in jersey pocket. One or two (depending on ride) extra 16g cartridges in saddle bag with one spare tube. Small box of self sticking patches. That'll do it. Oh, and a cell phone in case I flat more than three times.

CO2, three cartridges, two tubes and a small patch kit. I have never had more than one flat in a day, but there is always a first time.

I use a Innovations SecondWind its a combo hand pump and CO2 works great I like it also bacause you can pump the tube up a little for mounting and finish off wit CO2 o just pump it. Hand pump works good and easy to get 80 psi if your not in a hurry.

Both.

C02 is superior and always gets used first by me.
But you gotta always carry a patch kit and small pump, cuz u never know what kind of bad luck youll have and you gotta be prepared.

two cartridges and a spare tube plus glueless patches incase of a second blow out. On really long rides two tubes, and a minipump in the jersey (Usually if I am going to be really far from home or help)

Man, CO2 is a waste of money and isn't green...

My $8 hurricane mini pump from performance totally does the job and it's lasted me 5+ years...

And using the pump 3-5 times a year keeps the arms toned too.

Chicks dig that!

Money is green.

And with it I can buy (and carry) two tubes, patch kit, two Co2 carts with mini-inflator, mini-pump, and one tire lever. Co2 stuff and mini-pump combined weigh less than the Road Morph they replaced, and are easier to stow out of the way.

BTW, 16 gram threaded Co2 carts for the mini-inflator are $1.30 ea. in bulk on ebay, shipped. I promise I'll recycle them.

I use flat resistant tires and a pump. No CO2.

In a half season of riding on my newest bike I haven't gotten a flat, and I figure I'll have forgotten how to use the CO2 stuff by the time I get one.

And I don't have to worry about using my CO2 cartridge then forgetting to replace it - I KNOW that would happen. I'm lazy - a pump is minimum maintenance. No replacements necessary.

And I can stop and help other people with a flat without using up my "last CO2 cartridge".

And I don't have to worry that I'll have a string of flats and run out of cartridges.

There's probably more reasons, but that's it off the top of my head.

It's slightly unrelated, but I always carry my cell phone. I've had a frame break on me (1970's steel frame, rusted out). A friend of mine had the bolt that held his seat on snap off. There's a certain number of breakdowns you just can't be prepared for, and that's not even counting "emergencies". Though to be honest, I've always imagined I'd get in a an accident, want to call 911, and find out that my phone broke in the crash...

CO2 should only be considered for race situations. You've got one shot at getting the thing pumped up, and if it doesn't work someone will be by to pick you up anyways.
I've seen way too much cycling related crap littering the side of the road.
We cyclists are supposed to be leading the way, aren't we?

racing doesn't count.

one tube, one c02 cart, one silca c02 head, tire levers and a multi tool in one of those topeak bubble bag thingers.

my other bike i kept:
2x tubes
2x c02 carts
1x topeak c02 inflator (loaded)
3x tire levers
1x patch kit
1x topeak road morph
...in a carradice barley bag.

my new bike is significantly racier and lacks carrying space.

edit: i've never actually flatted on the road, though i'm a chronic over-packer.
