Brake vs shifter housing

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brake vs shifter housing

Is it a bad idea to use brake housing for shift cabling, or to use shift cabling for brake housing?

Indexed shifting cable housings need to be compressionless. However, standard shift cable housings are not strong enough to be used for the brakes. Brake cables are also thicker and would not fit in a shift housing. Some housings such as Nokons are compressionless and strong enough to be used for shift or brake cables.
