Just to be clear - Campy chain question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just to be clear - Campy chain question

Ok - I'm a newb at the mechanical end of biking (just starting to do things for myself) and I want to check something before I go buy parts that don't work.

I'm running Campy Centaur 10 - if I switch to a KMC 10 chain it will be:
a) compatible?
b) not any noisier than the Campy chain?
c) will enable me to remove my chain for cleaning?
d) will be less of a hassle if I ever break a chain on the road (I know, VERY slim odds there)

Is there a downside to switching that I'm missing? I've always run Campy chains, but I'd like to be able to take the chain off more easily. Also, KMC is about half the price.

Thoughts?

The KMC DX10SC is perfectly compatible and a bargain if you can get it for $20-25. As far as a hassle if it breaks, that would be no different. Unless is breaks at the masterlink, you still need a chain tool and maybe another master link to get going again.

The KMC won't last as long, but the masterlink may make it worth the reduced life.

FWIW, you can Campy Veloce chains pretty cheap from the UK and some stores sell the Campy UN version of the KMC masterlink for a reasonable price. A SRAM 10 powerloc will also fit the Campy chain.

I've used the KMC the last two chains and I'm switching back to a Record chain. In my experience the Record chains are quieter and last longer and I don't remove my chain to clean it so the master link is a moot point for me. Less than 60 shipped for a record on ebay, less than 50 shipped for a chorus version. worth it IMO.

That's a lot more than I ever paid for Campy chain.

I would recommend a Campagnolo chain with a Wipperman link. For pretty much any ten speed drivetrain really. I'm using a full Wipperman chain at the moment and it's pretty good.

OP didn't specify whether he's running 5.9 or an older 6.2 mm compatible drivetrain. Any issues running an older drivetrain with a newer, narrower chain?

Good point - it's '06 Centaur 10 speed, for whatever that's worth.

There is no difference in the 10 speed drivetrains due to the narrower chain. The cog spacing and chainring spacing have never changed.

As for the wipperman connex link, they are great, but wipperman quit making the only model that fits the Campy UN chain (the 10S1). The current version of the connex will close easily around the UN chain, but it is a sloppy fit with 1/3 more side clearance than it should have. It's probably no big deal. I'm trying out an equally sloppy fit with a 10S1 link on an 11 speed chain.
