I've always had two on my bikes, but a lot of my rides are 1-2 hour hills rides and there's water at the top, so I only need one bottle. For my longer rides -- 2-4 hours -- I usually stop and have a snack somewhere, and some water. So I only need one bottle on those days. For centuries, of course one needs more water, but on those rides I have a backpack anyhow.

So, how many of you make do with one, rather than two bottle cages (for weight and/or aesthetic reasons)?

Most of the time I have two, even if I'm only carrying one bottle, but that's only because it's not worth the effort to take the other off. For a crit, I'll generally take the second off (leave the seat tube one on for aero-ness), then leave it off until my next two-bottle-worthy ride.

You need an option for 2+. I've actually got 3. One on the down tube (holds a large bottle with electrolyte solution), then 2 behind the seat (small bottles with water).

2 bottles on my roadie, 1 on my tri plus a between the aerobars bottle, and 2 on my MTB. Plus, on long rides, I usually take a camelbak.

Why so much, you ask? Well, when I am out riding, I am not racing, merely training. So the extra weight actually helps me by forcing me to work harder, so that when I am actually racing (tri's), I have less weight and thus go faster. Plus, I never run out of water on my training rides, and on the tris, there are plenty of aid stations.

If your going to be riding over an hour you need 2, unless you like stopping for water. A race of that length would probably have a feed zone. If your worried about the 40-80g of a cage add more fibre to your diet and call it even.

Two...I ride with one bottle in the winter but in the summer, I stay hydrated, two bottles with refills as needed. It gets hot in the CA Central Valley.

2 bottles for every drink you take I take 2 since I'm instructed by a doctor to take anti-inflamatories during activities. I also keep cash for water, and extra sports drink mix on hand as well.

My bikes will only take one water bottle- Compact frames- so that is all I have. For rides up to 2 hours or so- I can refill if required but longer than 2 hours and the camelback get used.

Get smaller cages thats what I had to do and I ride a size small men's frame. I can carry 2, 24 ounce bottles now due to the smaller carbon cages.

I use two cages, but I don't always carry two bottles. On short rides I'll bring one bottle, but like someone else said to much of a PITA to take off bottle for shorter rides.

I have two cages, but unless it's really hot, I normally take one bottle. Besides, I know where to find water faucets on most rides... If it's really, really hot- I might take a camelbak, as much as I hate them.

Two - I like to take one bottle of water and one bottle of Gatorade or Powerade or something.

Just the sports drinks and I feel to sugary, just the water and I feel the need for something a little more substantial...
