Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, the second one. Great tires. Durable and no complaints with traction. I can often get 2000mi. or more, on these tires. Of course, any tire can get cut. I buy them in quantity when the price is good. That's a GREAT price on those GP4000S tires, btw.

I just got some GP4000s cos they were cheap and I doubt I'll get them again, way too many flats and all kinds of cuts and gouges in a couple months of riding.

Vredestein Fortezza perform just as well and are a lot more durable.

Well when the P3R's die again I'll probably go with Ultremo R's but right now 40 for a new rear race tire to match my perfect front one is cheaper. I'm excited to try the gator skins because i had AMAZING luck with the Krylions, 2000 something miles later and they're still in use as my rainy day/pit wheel tires.

I'm just hoping that the handling on the Gatorskins is good enough to leave them on for racing because frankly some of the crits I've been doing have terrible **** spread across the edge of the road. I can't believe how messed up my rear tire got today in a freaking 30 minute crit. Any of you guys have an idea of how much cornering traction I'm going to lose with the Gators because that's all I'm concerned about. I know we're talking probably marginal differences but lets face it, there's going to be times I'm too busy or lazy to switch my race tires on..

I just switched to Vittoria Open Pave EVO CG; rides like Vittoria Open Corsa EVO CX but a lot more durable. Plus, they have a s****y green color.

I have yet to flat my Ultremos. Everyone says racing tire only but I'm using mine for my commutes from Lawndale to Sherman Oaks which includes a long stint on Sepulveda and they've been great. Might be worth a shot as a training tire as well.

Of course, now that I'm posting this I'm guaranteed to flat this week.

One more thing - prior to the Schwalbes I rode Gatorskins. Forever. With no flats. They were durable, but the handling sucked a bit and they were noticibly harder to spin up. Oh, they bounced a bit when cornering too.

I have had both of these tires and much prefer the second link. You may also look at Ebay as I found good deals there.

If you're "done" with your PR3's send them to me.

Outside of that I would run Contis- GP 4000S.

Interesting well I'm going to keep using those P3R's till they wear out or *sigh* gash again and then do the Ultremo R's. I'm not so concerned with the ride quality in training but for crits I'll definitely have to swap out the Gatorskins the evening before a race if the quality of ride is that bad.

And FWIW I'm not so worried about flats I'm more worried about gashes I don't seem to have a flat problem just a gashing and tearing problem.

I found them here https://store.mpgear.com/schwalbe-ultremo-r-tire.aspx anyone have any input on this place?
Total Cycling has them for $40. Five days to my door in Minnesota.

+1.

My replacement PR3s arrived from PBK and I finally got around to fitting the third one in the last 12 months and rode my favourite 50 km loop. They are a seriously good tyre. If only they were a bit tougher.

if the rear tyre has cuts in it, but is nearly new. You can use super glue to fill the cut, or a wrapped up $5 note (we have plastic money in Australia, not paper) or something similar under the cut to prevent the tube pushing through the cut. I have used a torn off piece of mc donalds drink cup, the waxed carboard cup, and it lasted about 8 months in the tyre.

i have NEVER had a puncture or any major cuts from zaffiro pros..probably because i now stick to my favourite main roads. they are a good training tyre. the GP4000s are pretty good, as previously noted.

I'm well and truly done with my P3R's. I would gladly send them to you, but I don't know how useful they would be. Blown-out sidewalls on both, with well under 500 miles. This is in addition to the cuts/gashes one would normally expect, and which don't bother me so long as I don't see fibers poking out. Holes in the sidewalls large enough to poke my thumb through? Those bother me, especially when they occur without any warning, on a clean and smooth road, with tires inflated to manufacturer's specs. My personal feeling is that Michelin sacrificed too much in the durability department, in order to produce a sub-200 gram tire.

I would have replaced them with P2R's, but the supply has dwindled away, and the prices are high if you find them. I still have a decent pair of them on my single-speed, and I'll ride them til they die. I put a pair of GP 4000S on my road bike, and am very pleased. All the performance of Michelins, without the flats and difficult mounting. I'm sold.

I always ran the Krylions but when I couldn't get them I went with PR2's and they have been a great performer as well IMO....if the Krylions are available, I'll go back to those when I need new tires....if not, maybe I'll try some GP 4000s

Just out of curiosity... what tire pressure are you guys running these at?

I liked the PR2's, and am thinking about getting the PR3's.

I'm a huge fan of Michelin's Krylion, P3R, & P2R. Naturally I've had great luck with the Krylion and P2R. The P3R has fared pretty well, but I got a big gash in the sidewall of my front tire within the first 100mi. It was probably just unlucky, but I had no intention to continue riding that particular tire on the front for safety reasons, even after repair (I replaced it with an old P2R that's got many cuts but not a single flat, with over 750mi). On the other hand, the rear P3R has been going strong without any flats or major cuts for 500mi (this is on Boston-area roads--tons of gravel, potholes, salt).

In any case, I just ordered two Continental Gran Prix 4000 S to see what all the excitement is about. I'll probably just throw both of them on as soon as I receive them, since I'll be doing collegiate races for the next 8 weeks and would like to corner on new tires .

How bad are these cuts you guys are talking about?

I had a few minor kincks (gashes) and never thought anything of them. I ran that rear tire until it was squared off with threads showing, without much of a problem. (Close to 2k miles).

The little slices and cuts were all not so bad I just put patches under them but something nasty hit the side wall and "shaved" all the way to the core, if it were to blow no patch would do anything. I'd rather spend the $30 for a new tire from PBK than have that thing explode in a 30 mph sprint on the last lap of a crit. That's just me.

As far as PSI goes, I used to run my tires at 120 then I started thinking that might be a bit excessive even though everyone seems to do it. So lately I've been experimenting at 100 to 110 and noticed better handling. I'm going to stop going past 110 I only weigh about 162 right now, if you look at Michelin's charts it says for someone my weight I should only be inflating to something around 95 I think.

True but you'll get fewer punctures at a higher PSI. I run my Michelin P2R and P3R at 110 minimum, and I weigh around 140.
