Patch or Pitch?

Whats the consensus - do you patch your tubes or pitch them and run new ones.
I'm not talking about what you do on the side of the road to get rolling again; I mean what do you do with the inevitable pile of of punctured tubes that accumulate.

At home, I pull my temp patches off, and glue a proper patch in place. But no more then 2-3 patches per tube, and no patches close to the stem.

i usually patch them, then leave them in a box, and they never see daylight again.

I prefer to keep a new tube in my seat bag. But the wheels I use require long stems, which sometimes the LBS runs out of, so I've kept a few patched tubes around for back-up.

I patch tubes, then put them back in rotation as spares. I usually wait until I have about three or four to do at once. I always end up breaking the valve stem thingy before I can accumulate too many patches on a single tube.

If you flat regularly, just collect a few and patch them all at the same time. Patching 4 tubes does not take much more time than patching one.

If you only flat once a year, it doesn't matter as much. The glue in your patch kit may dry up between patches.

Patch until I can't patch any more. Big rip, or near the stem I toss 'em.

Patch once. Toss when it flats a second time. Brings the average cost of a tube down to $2.50 or so.

I seem to be the minority, but I just pitch them. I want nothing to do with patched tubes. I stock up on tubes during sales, so at $3-4 a tube, it doesn't make sense to me to chance riding with a patched tube. It is also hardly seems worth the effort.

I used to throw away when I started riding but I get so many flats I just patch up to 2 times per tube. I usually get flats from small glass shards so patching is not a problem. If there is a huge tear, I toss.

Huh? I think that if your technique is good, the patched tube is as good as a new one. I don't get it....well maybe the people who pitch their tubes are the same ones that use c02 instead of a pump.

I will never patch another tube. My time is worth more than the cost of the tube and breathing the adhesive compound is not an acceptable risk.

I could save a few bucks here and there if I changed my own oil, but I'll be damned if I'm going to do that.

I pitch them. Karma seems to smite me when I try to out smart it by patching. I had a bad run of flats last year around July/August and I decided to do whatever it takes to keep rollin even if it costs me an extra buck or two.

I've never had a patch fail. I'm pretty sure that a (properly installed) patch, like a weld, is stronger than the original material around it.

If the time spent patching the tube is taken from time you would be making money then it makes sense. But most of us just patch them while out for a recreational ride or while at home puttering around the garage or watching TV so as long as tubes cost more than patches it's always worth our while. And if its family time we're talking about; time spent showing your kid how to patch a tire is time well spent.

As for the adhesive compound, just smear a dime size patch of it on the tube; don't empty the whole tube into a paper bag and huff it.

So whats the proper method to achieve these weld like patches. What glue? Do you sacrifice another tube to become material for patches?
