Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What do you prefer for winter riding, knickers or full length bib tights

I need to start riding outside as I have realized I can only do so much indoor training during the winter. So I am looking at getting some new riding wear. When I go running in the cold I usually wear tights underneath my running shorts to help keep me warm. However it gets pretty warm once I get warmed up. I was thinking of maybe giving the knickers a try hoping they would be warm enough, as well as help keep me cool enough when I got warmed up from riding. Any thoughts or preference?

Why buy knickers when you can use knee warmers?

Very true, sorry about that. Mid-west, down to 30s and 40s (without including windchill).

These combinations work for me. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Bibs: 100+ to 65
Bibs + kneewarmers: 64 to 50
Knickers ("Roubaix" material): 49 to 35
Bibs + tights: 34 to 25

Temps in F. It never gets colder than 25F here so I can't help you below that.

20's: a slathering of Belgium Knee Warmers and Knickers and a shot of Bourbon (no joke)

because with knickers nothing will slide down, no need for adjustments along the way.

i ride in cold (enough) temps (20-40F) in wool knickers. my calves are cold for the first few minutes, but then they warm up and all is well.

although full length would be nice for the rainy/cold days.

Any reason not to skip out on the kneewarmers under 65 and just use the knickers? Except for the reason that you already have them?

Sometimes. Depends on the time of day and whether it's likely to get warmer by the end of the ride. These particular knickers have a thin fleecey inside. If the sun comes out it's likely my butt will get too hot.

I enjoy more flexibility in my Knee Warmers versus knickers...always opt for them first. Y'all should really consider some sort of embrocation...for temps as far down as the lower 50's to upper 40's, a quality embro can do wonders without the need for actual knee warmers.

for my commute (temps in *F, presuming sunny and variable wind, no precip):

down to 70: bib shorts
70 to 55ish: shorts+legwarmers, or knickers
65ish down to 35ish: knickers
35ish to 20ish: full tights
20ish to 10ish: knickers + Cannondale LE tights
single digits: I'm skiing

here in the front range, temps vary widely from 7am to 5pm; I'll prefer to be on the cold side in the morning to being too hot in the afternoon....

Bib tights. Just picked up a pair of Pearl Izumi and am happy with the fit and quality.

Try the tights you own, cycling has a little more wind chill than running. Both of mine are made for running, 1 with wind front for those really cold days. I just wear them over my bibs. For those in between days I just use knee warmers.

Tights. It needs to be above 40 for me to willingly expose flesh and be happy about it.

At those temperatures I would be wearing full bib tights for a training ride. I have knee warmers and warm bib knickers too but for me those are for warmer temperatures.
