Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

About to get a bike for my friend on eBay, quick question..

Here is the bike

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200318196802

The ad says that the top tube is 55.5, does that mean that the frame is 55.5? I'm just a little confused by the compact geometry.

My friend is 5'10", he's never ridden a road bike before but when he went to a bike shop around here they told him he was probably a 56.

Oh, if you notice anything else wrong with the bike lemme know, or if you think it's a good deal lemme know too.

Carbon frame, Ultegra, low miles and good maintenance, seems like a win if the size is right.

No. (conventional) frame sizes are a measure of the length of the seat tube. Compacts are usually sized as S, M, L, etc.

"Probably" isn't good enough; he should be properly fitted before buying a bike. There are plenty of guys who are 5-10 and ride 54 cm. frames. It depends on the individual.

That being said, a M(edium) TCR frame is probably the right choice for a normally-proportioned guy who is 5-10.

Looks like a good deal for $700. But there are many good deals out there in this economy.

Yeah this is the best one I found for his size, I was mainly checking out specialized, felt, giant since they seem to have decent components for decent prices.

Problem is medium Giant frames are usually 54-54.5 cms effective tt (brother has a TCR med). I'd be willing to bet your friend (op's) will be better off with a L
