09 Kestrel Talon vs. 09 Trek Madone 4.7 / 5.1
Hey all:
I am a recreational road bicyclist looking to replace a borrowed Kestrel 200EMS. I have narrowed it down to 3 bikes and would like the "experts" opinions on the following three bikes, and why one might be better for me. I ride ~100/mi per week, and am looking to continue this trend and maybe get more competitive as time goes on.
In the $2,500 price range, I have narrowed it down to the Trek Madone 4.7 (Ultegra) and the Kestrel Talon (both 2009s). What would be your recommendation be between the two?
Second, I have also considered the Madone 5.1 (with the OCLV frame). Is the slightly upgraded Ultegra SL set and better carbon frame worth $600? How big of a difference is there between the 4.7 and 5.1?
Thanks for all your help in advance.

I don't have an opinion on the Kestrel. However, I have an '08 5.1 and I love it. It's extremely comfortable and stiff enough. I ride mine about 200 miles a week and haven't had any issues. My LBS is selling '09 5.2s for $2,969.00 and 4.7s for 2,049.00 right now so you may be able to haggle a bit on the price.

I also have a 2008 Madone 5.1. I paid $2300 for mine. Find one if you can. I also tried the 4.5 (same frame as 4.7). The 5.1 was a better ride. I love that bike.

4.7 has standard BB and Spost. The 5.1 uses Treks no cut seat mast system and BB90 integrated BB.
Plus the 5.1 is made in the USA.

RT800 has a bonded rear triangle as well. However, I that's not an issue with Kestrel has been making CF frames for a few years now.

If you want a Madone try to get a 5.1 or above. Several stores in my area still have 08 5.2's available for well below $3k.
