What the hec?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What the hec?

I bought a used Giant OCR 3 (2004 model I think) and it has rapid fire shifters on the top....like you would find on a mountain bike, then it has brake levers near the drops. Did Giant ever make a OCR 3 set up like this? or did the owner replace the STI with this crap?

There isn't even any screw holding the brake levers or shifters down. They all kinda just stay on cause it appears the mounts are too small for the bars.

Also, the front small and second chainring make horrible noises...I was told the bike just needed tuned, but I wonder if this is related to the rapid fire shifter set up?

It's definitely not supposed to be like that. Mountain-style shifters are meant for a 25.4mm bar, which would explain the lack of screws used to hold it onto a 26.0mm road bar.

If its also a road drive train, the FD pulls are not compatible with the shifters. That would explain the horrible noises.

Get that bike returned.

Might be a hassle since I suspect those shifters are jammed in there. Why anyone would that is beyond me.

It's beyond me as well. I can't wait to hear the sellers reason. As far as removing the current stuff, I am sure if I remove the tape I can slide everything off with some pliers. Worst case scenario, new bars.

Pain in the butt though. I thought $200 was a good deal but now...I don't know.

Amazing. Cut 'em of with a dremmel? Yeah, get rid of that **** and put some sora levers on it and you are good to go. Or spend $35 at nashbar and get a new profile design h20 handlebar.

WTF didn't you ask the original owner before you bought the bike?

I didn't. I was late for an important meeting and picked the bike up on the way. I didn't even ride it before buying it...I just handed him the $200, took the bike, and left in a hurry.

He was asking $350, so I thought I was getting a good deal at $200...even if it did need "tuned" as he said.
I kinda wanted to get the bike before anyone else offered him full price...and the only time I could meet him that day was before my meeting.

I didn't notice the weird set up until I got home...confused yet?

If all I need is STI shifters then it's all good. I really like the bike.

I texted him.

Me: Do you know what happened to the STI shifters?

Him: No

Me: The bike came this way?

Him: Yes

Me: I thought you said you bought it new. Giant made a road bike with MTB shifters?

Him: I don't know

Bleh.

Why would you try to rip someone off who knows A. where you live and B. where you park your BMW?

that's what you get for rushing through things and not paying attention to the details.

Well...sorry to say this, but you definitely got the shaft. That's why you don't buy things in a hurry with Craigslist, especially bikes.

Send it to a shop and have them take a look at it, as well as quote you for switching it over to a proper setup.

F these thread-Freds...it sounds like you got a decent deal either way. Just buy the shifters you want, have a shop install them and sell the old ones. Slight hassle, but not the end of the world.

if the frame and most of the components are in good shape, and the only thing you have to switch over are the brifters and maybe handlebars, that a pretty good deal still, just not as awesome as you hoped

I find those pics hilarious. Certainly an interesting exercise in engineering.

And yeah, it seems like you still got a decent deal so I wouldn't sweat it. Like others have said, just find some cheap brifters and maybe a new bar and you will be set. Should solve the problem of the horrible noises.
