Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The petrol station compressor won't reach 120 psi.

I've used them. They work but LWaB is probably right, those compressors are for cars where you normally only need about 40psi or so.

They work just fine, I carry one because it doesn't make sense to use a $5 CO2 cartridge if I flat right next to a gas station. I've only encountered one compressor that wouldn't go above 100psi

Most standard air compressors will go to about 160 psi. I cant imagine gas station compressors being any less than 120. filling a 40 psi tire with 60 psi would be slow.

It is a good piece of insurance to have along. A fellow rider blew out his spare one day and my tubes were short stem. The adapter allowed us to use the shraeder fitting on a frame pump to get him filled enough to continue.

The adapters work fine. I use one to fill my tires at home before I ride.

Most gas stations compressors shut off at around 100psi.

My wife stopped at a Truck Stop to air up one of her tires and blew it right off the rim.

I watched my old college roommate do the same thing. It was quite entertaining.

The air pressure available to the public (the quarter eaters) is about 45 psi.

The compresser being used in the service bay is probably set arount 120 or 130. Our service air system in the machine shop is set to 125 psi, which is standard for most pro level air powered tools.

Ask nice and they will probably let you use the service air system, but...

Be sure and ask at what point it is filtered and oiled. Our system is filtered at the end user port and oiled on the connection hose to the tools, which is industry standard, but who knows at a gas station.

You can't be a cyclist without a tire pump. You will pay the price for this - you won't be as diligent about keeping the tire pressure perfect and you will have flats. Buy a pump - they aren't that expensive.

I've blown tires using gas station pumps before. YMMV.
But they're handy to have.

Get yourself a floor pump. It's not that expensive.

I haven't found any that go over about 80 psi over the last 20 years or so but YMMV

Mine goes to 120 psi. I just wish someone made a presta valve chuck for it.

You can purchase a pump with a duel head (presta/schrader) with a lifetime warranty for 29$. Just don't eat out for like a day and half or don't buy any Starbucks and you will have a nice pump and a bike with properly inflated tires. FYI you should be checking your tire pressure before every ride. Not every time you have a chance to get to the LBS and your tires are low.
