Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cleat Question

I just recently got some LOOK Keo Sprints and Sidi Ergo 2 for my CAAD9. I was just wonder how tight you should make screw the screw cleats to your shoes. I looked through both manuals and didn't remember seeing a specific torque setting. Didn't want to break anything before I used them. Thanks.

I crank mine down as tight as possible and the Sidi's are fine.

Grease the bolts before tightening them. That way they will stay secure with less torque.

A torque setting for cleat screws? See folks, that's what happens when just anyone is allowed a torque wrench.

Just tighten to be snug. Use grease, like johnny99 says. Torque settings are just CYA speak for "customer is responsible if the carbon breaks." Useless for the small screws that are used on a bike.

Good advice. Lube threads, tighten to snug, if shoe moves at all when trying to unclip, then tighten more until it is secure on the pedal.

i try to use the flat blade screwdriver when i install them and save the hex fitting for when i need it- they strip out really easily. get em reasonably tight, but you don't need to crank em super duper tight.

Yea, my time cleat instructions state a torque spec for the cleat screws, but I'd have to say it's waaay beyond what I would tighten them. I tightend them nice and snug (plenty snug, w/ grease), and then for grins checked with the TW, and it wasn't even close.

Just a comment to remember that torque specs are often maximums, and there's often (usually) no need to go that high.
