What gives? I am a new rider and have been experiencing some chaffing - I have a pair of BellWeather shorts and wear no underwear - however - I still get chaffed and burned on my rear. Are they too lose - perhaps? Do I need a better pair? They cost around $49 - I know cost is not everything. All help greatly appreciated!!

Sir,
Buy quality. With high quality bibs you will get a nicer padded anti bacterial chamois. |
In my experience certainly loose shorts are a bad thing. I go for a tight fit without feeling uncomfortable!!
I also find that you need to try different brands until you find one that suits YOU. In general the cheaper shorts are OK but they don't last as long and the chamois is generally thinner and hence less comfortable for those long rides. |
Bike Shorts
should be "embarrasingly" tight, try Peal Izumi. You should have 8 panels, not six. Also check seat (saddle), as wide comfortable seats tend to chafe.

Shorts
Buy top of the line shorts, Giordana, Castelli, Assos, Pearl Izumi...Better material, better padding. They are ridiculously expensive but after a long ride you will appreciate the difference. Another thing you might try (and I would do this before buying new shorts) is try some of the creams available to prevent chafing. Dairy farmers know of the great advantage of BAG BALM -available at drug stores over the counter. It's very greasy but works wonders. There are also bicycle specific products: Assos Chamois Creme works well but costly, as is Chamoois Butt'r by Paceline. Good stuff. I hope this doesn't seem to be a commercial for these guys. I just know it works.,

Again, just buy brand name. High price doesn't dictate quality. There are a few great ones we sell here at around $40.00.

here's a quick fix that works for any shorts, high priced or not. Try lathering you ass with bag balm. rum deep down in your crack and under your balls. It works great, problem solved.
