Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Made my day

some team mates and I were on a recovery ride earlier this week, just cruising two abreast in a pace line shootin the ****. I was bringing up the rear end when I hear an elderly British accent sternly say "ON YOUR LEFT!" I look over and this lady who had to be in her 70s was motoring past us in her drops on an old steel bike. She looked SO pissed and tough, it as amazing! I saw her an hour later and she was still in the drops hammering. So effin' cool. Of course I figured it was Pcad's Brit sister... oh wait she was going fast... so probably not.

Sorry, it was probably the high light of my week, chick was AWESOME.

I love getting schooled by women in their 70s.

After schooling you on the bike, she'd probably drink you under the table.

Back when I was skiing all the time, I dropped in on a double black diamond called "The Wall" in Holiday Valley, NY. I completely ATE it about 5 moguls in, and yard-sale'd about half way down the hill. Once I stopped, I looked up to see somebody grabbing my ski and bringing it down to me. To my surprise, it was like a 65 year old woman!!!

They're out there. Just think about how awesome they must've been in their 20's and 30's.

In their 20s and 30s they were probably raising kids, and didn't know they were on the fringes of the curve.

No doubt, ever since I started racing and training for racing I'm such a light weight it's ridiculous, a lot of people I know who are really athletic can't drink like they used to.

When I'm 70 if I'm still riding I'm just going to be this old curmudgeon who tells all the young bucks about how back in my day we didn't have no stinkin' electronic shifters and we rode real bikes, made out of carbon.

Recovery ride? Sounds like your cover-term for intervals, Nick.

Good for her!!

There was a woman in Winnipeg who I frequently saw out cycling ... sometimes 2 or more times a day. She was slender, muscular, and I wouldn't have put her a day over about 45. Several years after first noticing her, I met someone who knew her ............ turned out she was in her early 70s. And she faithfully logged a lot of miles every year.

I met a guy in the hostel in Leadville who had ridden his bike (fully loaded) from Florida to Alaska and was on his way back to Florida. The year before he had hiked the entire AT. He was 81.

I've ridden a one-week San Diego bike tour three times now, each time this one lady was there -- last year she was 71, and rode every inch of the tour, including the century day and the 5000' of climbing day.

I wanna be like them when I grow up.

I want to be just like her when I get that age, except for maybe "looking pissed". Great story.

Any ride becomes a recovery ride when a person in their 70's passes you, right?

That's a great story! I'd like to try to keep up with her sometime.

If she's as old as you describe perhaps "chick" isn't quite the word to describe her. Fierce comes to mind.
