Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

bike fit question

i hope someone can help. when i ride anything over 40 miles or so, i get a real pain in my left arm and to a lesser degree in my right arm. the pain is about 6 inches down from the shoulder and goes away after just a couple of minutes off the bike. other info: i ride a kestrel talon, am 61, have my hands on the drops about one third of the time (doesn't seem to matter), usually ride three days a week for a total of 150 miles or so.

thanks in advance
gerry

Most upper body pain (back, neck, shoulders, arms) is related to not bending your elbows enough when riding. If you lack the strength or flexibility to bend your elbows, you may need to adjust your handlebar or saddle position.

Your core strength and flexibility are likely (due to your age) not sufficient for your riding position.

This is a complete guess, though, as I've never seen you on the bike.

Do you have any pictures of you riding? A profile shot would be useful.
