A Fred is a bicyclist who does not feel compelled to make a lame-a**ed excuse for not using a rear view mirror, wearing a helmet or a screaming yellow whatever.

I understood it to be that Pcad is the only one who gives Fred status on these boards.

I embrace my Fredosity, white socks mid calf, triple, bit of a gut. I'm old, though, so I don't get too much crap about it.

Fred is a derogatory term about someone else. Everyone on this board, and I do mean everyone, has been called a Fred by someone else. Maybe they didn’t call you a Fred, maybe they called you a Dork, or maybe they called you a Sissy in Tights, but it’s all the same, you are a Fred to someone. So, if I’m a Fred to someone, and I know that I am, I embrace the Fred in me. But you know something, I don’t care what you think, and that’s the first thing you need to be a true Fred.

Being Fred is an achievement in recognizing what is truly important - and ignoring everything else.
Calling someone else Fred is the opposite.

Once again, do I fit in with the Freds:
Me on the way to work at 6:45 this morning:
Bike: Surly Crosscheck with road tires, Brooks Saddle, mismatched wheelset (front, cheap Alex, rear, hand built by me with a Velocity aerohead rim). Tiagra 9 speed with barcon shifters. Old Sakai SX cranks.
Accessories: Rear rack, trunk bag, various rear lights. Homemade, very, very bright, front light. Usual computer plus a heart rate monitor.
Clothing: Regular cargo shorts with boxer briefs. Bright orange long sleeved jersey from Performance. Shimano clipless sandals. Socks. No gloves. Helmet with mirror and blinking red light on the back.

I've read that a female fred was a "Doris", but have never seen anyone actually use that term.

I'm a Fred, but I would never admit to it.

I've heard both referred to as Fred. In fact, Sheldon Brown's site used to have a definition for Fred that included both variations, but it vanished at some point, as far as I can tell.
I would have rocked the hell out of that contest had I been eligible.
...So I guess I'm not ashamed to admit it. Not that there's anything to be ashamed of.

I'm a bit of a Frednazi.
I consider all other Freds to be poseurs.
And dumb. They all seem to miss the irony and sarcasm in my smiles and waves and bell dings.
