Once again, do I fit in with the Freds:
Me on the way to work at 6:45 this morning:
Bike: Surly Crosscheck with road tires, Brooks Saddle, mismatched wheelset (front, cheap Alex, rear, hand built by me with a Velocity aerohead rim). Tiagra 9 speed with barcon shifters. Old Sakai SX cranks.
Accessories: Rear rack, trunk bag, various rear lights. Homemade, very, very bright, front light. Usual computer plus a heart rate monitor.
Clothing: Regular cargo shorts with boxer briefs. Bright orange long sleeved jersey from Performance. Shimano clipless sandals. Socks. No gloves. Helmet with mirror and blinking red light on the back.

If "Fred" is a person who happens to be riding a bike but isn't a serious cyclist, I don't admit to that.
But if Fred is a non-comformist who doesn't follow any cycling fads and fashion, then I admit to it wholeheartedly.

I don't mind Freds...except when they ride on the sidewalks or in the middle of the road.

Fred is a non-conformist and doesn't keep up with the latest fads and fashions in the cycling world. This is the only thing I would like about being the Fred. I myself don't like wearing the skin type jerseys when training.
But Fred also has an expensive 5k bike, is stimulated to ride by seeing the tour de france, and goes 15mph on the flats while sporting his yellow jersey. Fred also conserves his energy until a pro tries pass to him, that way he can start sprinting and "drop" the pro for about 10 seconds. Fred is cool.

No, you aren't a full-blown Fred. You are more of a commuter.
If we were discussing your clothes sense, one would say you're an aesthetically challenged, unmarried man. (I say this because it's easy to tell when some men are unmarried: if they were, they wouldn't dress like they do, because their wives would never allow them out the door without re-dressing them.)
I think Fred-ness requires some element of posing.

I was thinking about getting a Dynohub for the front and a Powertap for the rear. Some zips would just complete the setup. think about showing up at a time trial with that setup

Confession: I might be a Fred. Do you think so?
I'm a 45 year old doctor, with a love of bikes. It's not like I'm rich because I can't afford a house, but then again I have young kids and live in a condo. (A house would be nice but this is Vancouver, and I buy too many books, too much nice red wine -- one-two glasses a day, quality over quantity -- and too much hiking gear. AND too much bike stuff...)
I have three ti bikes, all bought used. Two nice ones and a lower end one. (A few years ago, when my mom was dying, she gave me a couple of grand and said "buy yourself a nice bike", and I just kept it up.) I'm an SRAM Force and X-9 kind of guy, so as you can tell, I buy good stuff but not elite or the "best" stuff. I am 6 one and pretty strong but weigh ~180-ish when I should lose 10 off my torso and weigh 170-ish. It shows a bit when I wear lycra.
I'm not a poser since I don't really care what others think, but my bikes and bike stuff are probably "too good for me". Am I a Fred?

But it depends where you stand on 3/2 vs. 6/4.
It was made by a company in the States that specialize in wheelchairs. I think (but am not sure) that their welders made bikes but now don't.

On my daily commutes, I'm Super-Fred:
But, I also race, and when I'm out on the race bike, I'm definitely not Fred. Last night I rode the Wednesday night "training ride" with our two local race teams. It was my first time this year, and somehow I managed to hang with the lead group for the whole ride despite the fact that at age 56, I was the oldest guy in the group (at least 50% of the starters were shelled off). We rode 37 miles, with 2500 feet of climbing, at an average speed of 20.0 mph, and I spent 30% of the ride in heart rate zone 5...dying, and loving it.

- ANSI Class II vest
