Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale Recalls Road Bicycles Due to Fall Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of product: 2009 Six 5, Six 6, Six Carbon 5 and Six Carbon 6 Bicycles

Units: About 1,300

Importer: Cannondale Bicycle Corporation, of Bethel, Conn.

Hazard: The bicycles fail to meet the federal safety standard for bicycles. Spoke protector discs, required on bicycles to prevent the bicycle chain from interfering or suddenly stopping the wheel, are missing from these bicycles. This poses a fall hazard to the rider.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The following Cannondale bicycles are included in the recall. "Six" is printed on the bicycle’s top tube and "Cannondale" is printed on the down tube.
Bicycle Name (2009 Models) Bicycle Model Number
Six 5 Compact 9RCT5C
Six 5 9RCT5D
Six 5 Compact 9RCT5C
Six 6 9RCT6D
Six 6 Triple 9RCT6T
Six Carbon 5 9RSX5D
Six Carbon 5 Compact 9RSX5C
Six Carbon 6 Compact 9RSX6C

Sold at: Authorized Cannondale dealers nationwide from October 2008 through February 2009 for between $1,500 and $2,100.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled bicycles immediately and contact any authorized Cannondale bicycle dealer for a free repair.

F'n CPSC. I remember the good old days when you could throw lawn darts from your brand new dork-disk-free 3 speed.

Anyone remember the thread (might have been in the mechanics forum) where some dude tried to remove his spoke protector by lighting it on fire? Pretty sure it was not a troll too. Classic BF.

Was that before or after putting his helmet in the washing machine?

Jumped my cassette and broke 4 spokes this weekend.
The derailleur is/was adjusted perfect but I was towing my kids in the trailer and I was trying to get a run at the driveway. So standing and leaning hard while pushing the lever seems to have exerted more force then during adjustment on the workstand.
I'm thinking of putting my plate back on, hell maybe I should just get a day glow jacket and some mirrors.

I was doing ~25 down a steep hill with a stop sign at the bottom, braking while downshifting the RD, when the chain dropped into the spokes, breaking about 6, mangling 6 others, locking the rear wheel, and leaving 20 feet of rubber on the road and a flat spot on the tire.

Sure I've seen the old: "You don't need a spoke protector if your derailleur is properly adjusted."
Well, guess what boys and girls; Sometimes *this* is how you find out your derailleur needs adjusting.

Did you mean to say Feds or Freds?

Either way, what a total Fred move by the Feds.

Forget the Slip-n-Slide. We were too poor for one of those things - well, my parents were too cheap, which amounts to the same thing . We simply put an old shower curtain down on the hill my the side of the house and then set the metal sprinkler head right in the center.

Too much transparency is bad. Just ask D. Cheney.
