$18K bikes aren't selling like they used too
|
Even with Super Record and Zipps, I don't see how you could spend $18K on a single bike.

Throw some LW Obermayer's and Super11 on a $6k frame and you're in that ballpark.
|
go to compeditive cyclist and start playing with bikes. You can get them up to 20k "easily)
Prince or dogma frame (~5000) SRM computer (~3000) Dura Ace Di2 (~5500) Lightweight wheels (~4500) Thats 18K right there. Add rediculous seat, bars, garmin 705, tires, and your pretty damn close to 20,000. |
I guess that's what I get for trolling eBay, Bonktown, pbk.com, etc. I have no idea what bikes cost in the real world.
|
I have no problem with nice bikes, but it seems like rigs in this obscene $ range would invite ridicule and skepticism at local rides/races, unless you're a pro.
|
Race? Those aren't racing bikes. They're posing bikes.
|
|
It is a shame.
People who pay too much subsidize those who don't pay enough. Are you part of a grocery store savings club? If so, you ought to be thanking everyone who shops there who isn't in the club for subsidizing your 2-for-1 specials. |

I'm surprised the coaches report they haven't had much of a drop-off in business.

It is all relative. If a guy makes $500,000/year, and he is very fond of bicycles, then I don't see why spending $20,000 on a bike is problematic.
I once had a friend complain to me bitterly about his boss using company funds to purchase a car for a girlfriend, who did not even work for the business. I let him finish, and then reminded him that his boss owns the business! |
I'm thinking about relative costs of low-end and vs. high-end bikes and cars. Seems like a 1:10 ratio would work out to be $2,000 : $20,000 for bikes, and $20,000 : $200,000 for car. Doesn't sound far off I guess mathematically. But somehow a $20,000 bike seems more outrageous than a $200,000 car. I don't have the empirical means to test either option, so the comparison is purely academic :)

i have no problem with somebody spending lots of money on a bike. $20k, go nuts bud. i've ridden in nyc on many occasions and to be honest its really fun because there are SO many nice bikes to drool over during your ride.
people think i am crazy for spending $3k on a bike. who am i to complain about somebody who is pulling down $5m/year on a $20k bike. btw not too many of them spend 20k. cadence, however, certainly does offer these bikes should the need arise. it's an epicly drool-worthy store. i recommend people stopping by its on hudson street in lower manhattan. |
I tried at Competitive Cyclist, and got a Pinarello Prince up to $17,598.34, without a power meter (which regrettably isn't an option on their calculator). I did add a Garmin Edge 705.

its all about money and lack thereof. For those who have it and likes bikes...20 grand is nothing really. For most of us its extravagance though.
Saying its ridiculous is not fair to those who worked hard and wants the best theirmoney can buy. So what if they crash it o the local crit...they probably have another 20k bike in their mansion. |
