Spring Break Ride Reports

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Spring Break Ride Reports

I got a mild ride in yesterday to get the legs prepped, and then headed up Angeles Crest Highway with other PAA members. I was the slowest in the group, which confirms that I shouldn't enter in any races in the near future, but they insisted on waiting for me at the peaks anyway. About 1/2 mile from our turnaround point, I got a blowout at 35 mph. Luckily, it was on a straight, so I had no trouble keeping it upright as I came to a stop. I checked the inside of the tire, changed the tube, and pumped it back up. That's when someone noticed the tube bulging out of a gash in the sidewall. I let the air out, put a boot over the gash (thanks to a teammate, I used a real boot instead of a dollar bill), then pumped it back up. Those boots are nice, easy to install, and contains everything very well. That's a big plus when you're about to turn around and descend the 6000' you just climbed. I got home safely with 65 miles and am about to get the credit card out and try PBK for the first time.

So, I can't be the only one who gets a Spring Break on here. Who else has been getting some extra miles in?

Who'd you ride with? If you tried to keep up with Wise don't feel bad, that guy made my lungs burn for two days doing almost 20 mph up trash truck.

PBK FTW!

I've been trying to up my miles and get stronger so I can keep up with Schaper, Benny, and Welch, damn guys are monsters. I don't even want to think about having to keep up with PAA 4 team.

Chris S, Rudy A, Rudy M, Becky, Aaron, and... one more guy I can't remember. Skinny Asian guy who sometimes descends lying on his top tube!!! I'm ashamed to not know his name, he's the one who gave me the boot. That thing works so much better than a dollar bill held in place by a glueless patch, I'm going to start carrying one or two.

I think so, and he was wearing a CA State Champ jersey. Rudy took some pics, so if I get ahold of one I'll post it for you to ID. I've been out of the loop since my first two races this season, even the guys I've ridden and raced with before introduced themselves to me.

I don't think Benny has a state champ jersey, I could be wrong, must be someone else.

No Spring Break here...

That's all back in the past...

But from what I can remember of them (and from what I am told), I had a pretty good time...

Yeah, 3 of the 7 people on this ride are teachers. That reminds me, he is an elementary teacher in South Pas, and plays the trumpet (as he did in grade school) in the community band directed by the local middle school teacher. Geez, I know this guy's life story but can't remember his name.

According to this tutorial, you should be using a crowbar to remove the tire before booting it. You did make sure to use a crowbar, right?

Lots of lazy miles so far. Group ride tonight them maybe a century or two before school starts up again. I also shaved my legs so my average speed should go up by like 5 mph
