Where are you travelling to cycle this year?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I haven't brought a bike to Australia yet, but since I am tied to United (living in Denver), I need to stick with them whenever I go to Australia. Those miles are enough for status right there and that gets you free economy plus for the year.
Qantas flies out of LA ... not that far from you. That's where I'm catching it.

One of the tricks to cheaper flights etc. is to use feeder flights or other methods to get to a main flight. For example, when I travel to France to ride the PBP, I fly into London (Heathrow) and then cycle, take the ferry, and take the train to the Paris area. That route saves me approx. $500 (overall, not just cycling charges) ... and I get so see more.

For my flight to Australia in June, the cheapest flight was Qantas from LA. So I'll book a cheap feeder flight from here to LA. That route will cost about $500-$800 cheaper than flying directly from here via AC.

Sometimes you've got to do a little hunting around and see what's available.

I do fly out of LA for Australia. I just meant that I couldn't forfeit my United miles on such a long flight. I need them for status since I fly about every other week on United.

Also, United and Qantas were close for coach, but Qantas was twice as much for business class.

BTW, I wish I had time to cycle. This will be my first time in Alice Springs. Also hitting Darwin on this trip.

Well yes, if you've got miles, that makes a difference. I've got them with AC, but used a bunch of them up last April.

When are you going?

Just north of Melbourne ... where the bushfires were. The bushfires wiped out my husband's home, and approx. 2000 other homes around, but we'll be living at the orchard where he works ..... for several months or a year anyway.

I should have known that. I saw your post...

When you both get settled again, you will have some wonderful cycling in that area.

Moab - tomorrow.
Santa Fe - next month
Possibly the Big Horn mountains in August.

Other than that - more I hope! If I ride out my door to tour in the rockies, does that count as traveling?

Not too far - too many concerns with work, family and budget to blow too much on travel - but I still plan on traveling to some centuries and endurance rides along the eastern USA:

- Mountains of Misery in Newport, VA (Memorial Day weekend)
- Harpoon Brewery-to-Brewery ride in Boston, MA (third weekend in June)
- Mountain Mama Road Bike Challenge in Monterey, VA (first weekend in August)
- Great River Ride in Westfield, MA (first weekend in October)

There may be others, but the most likely scenario is staying close. If I need to head out west for family matters, the bike may come with (especially if the trip lasts more than a week).

I did 16 from Buffalo to Ten Sleep across the Big Horns last year on my transam tour. That was an amazing ride. Definitely recommend going east to west.

I'm planning on bringing my bike on a meandering cross-country road trip from Washington to NJ. I'm looking to ride Washington, Oregon, NorCal, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, maybe New Mexico, then probably booking it to N.Carolina, and maybe some additional riding in VA. No set plans beyond the states yet though.

My friend is planning a club trip, with a van driving our stuff - all passes across the bighorns in both directions for every pass. should be good. I've done 2 crossings myself, both loaded - tensleep to buffalo and ranchester to greybull. great mountain range.

There are a couple of really worthy out-and-backs, all of which you can tune the distance by selecting a starting point.
- Dead Horse Point / Island in the Sky - century plus if you start in Moab, but you can start at the intesection of Hwy 191 & 311 or farther west to adjust distance
- Arches NP
- Canyonlands - Needles District - Hwy 211 from either Hwy 191 or Newspaper Rock parking area, or anywhere in between. (see sample photo below)

There's the La Sal Mountain Loop (haven't done it, was gonna do it, it's gonna be snowing on top this weekend, weah!) - I think the Moab Skinny Tire festival does that, there might be a map / track available online. Probably around 65 miles and tons of climbing.

Then there's something I noticed by car, and want to ride - a loop from Monticello over the Abajo mountains down into Indian Creek and back around on Hwy 191.

Generally the roads are good chipseal (if there is such a thing), water is limited to the park visitor centers, there aren't any towns, traffic is light, it's windy, and the scenery is unreal.

Bring a camera.

here's some pics of the river. (and one gratuitous shot of my cute kid).

Those pictures look familiar. I hope the flood situation remains "under control".

I've traveled from southern Michigan up to Northwest Michigan a number of times this summer, to ride the dune-hilly area around Traverse City.

I hope to go to Colorado at the end of the month to ride from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and back, with the Fifty-Plus forum. Net altitude gain is around 2500 feet, but it starts at 6000 feet. Plans were solid, but then my co-driver pulled out. I'll spend a few days with relatives in Denver, riding at 5000 feet and beginning to acclimate.

It's also time to look for a job, so I don't foresee any more cycling trips this year.

oooh, nice thread resurrection. Funny to see how my plans didn't happen.

In 2 weeks I'm going for a 3 week bike tour in Colorado. There's a teeny-eeny-weeny chance I'll be on the glenwood trail the same day as the 50+ ride - that would be totally cool. I'll be on my fully loaded tour bike, so wave as you pass me.

Going to Europe isn't that expensive ... I've been over there 3 times in the past 8 years to ride my bicycle. You should be able to get a flight for less than $1000 ... some seat sales are way less than that. And if you camp, accommodations there are inexpensive. Don't wait for retirement ... go when you finish University.
