1997 trek 2120 vs 1996 specialized allez sport

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1997 trek 2120 vs 1996 specialized allez sport

looking for a starter road bike (had some previous experience with mtb and ssfg riding). don't want to drop a lot of money for a first road bike, but want something worthy enough to take to weekly group rides.

found these two on C-list, same price ($300), same/comparable size, both stock, assume both in good condition. bikepedia links here and here.

the two bikes are pretty similar in specs, both triples, sti. trek has 105 and the specialized has rsx. i should also add that i am pretty comfortable with doing cleaning, maintenance, etc myself.

which one would you choose and why?

As you can tell from my sig, I've got the 1996 Allez Sport frame. Was my first road bike. Still ride it to this day (though with new components and wheels.) I've got photos of it posted in a few threads.

I also own a Trek, though not of that vintage.

For my two cents, I'd go with the Specialized, but go with whatever fits you the best and "speaks" to you, if that makes any sense. No point in buying a bike if it fits poorly or you don't like it aesthetically. Means you won't be riding it, which is the whole point.

Also, use the Specialized as my "mountain climbing" and long-distance machine. So its as capable as anything.
