Bored with frame color?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bored with frame color?

I did some reading through several threads on the topic of favorite bike/frame color. Black seems to be a strong favorite, and I can't argue with that. My first "real" bike in the 70's was black, as is my current one. Yet, I'm not married to black being my only choice. In fact, I'm about to drop some dough on a blue/white/black frame bike. I'd prefer black, but this deal is too good to pass up.

What I am curious about is if anyone has had a negative reaction to a specific frame color after they've owned it for some time. Say you thought white would be great, but then after a few weeks you begin to think you've made a mistake, and begin the search for a new bike with a different color. Any color you now avoid because of that sort of backlash? Also, is there any color you don't like from the get go?

Black, I love black. I had one, I'd love another one in that color. Red is what I have now, no regrets. White, if I ever had it, I wouldn't like it. No!

As you all know, or should know, black IS the fastest color. And to reinforce the superiority of black, everytime an inferior color (any color other than black) is being marketed as the best color, it is not uncommon to hear "{insert color here} is the new black".

And as they say... once you go black, you will eventually get to a point wherein you will have to make a really difficult decision regarding whether or not to go back.

hmmm... I tend to think the opposite. The busier the scheme the more likely you are to eventually get sick of it. Just like with food, the more intense the taste, the less likely you're gonna want to have it all the time.

Has that happened with you and a specific bike? Or a car maybe? Clothing? Home furnishings? How busy is too busy?

I follow you regarding food. A balance between simple and intense helps to appreciate both. Some people like their food simple all the time for purity's sake. But that's nutrition and dietary needs. A bike should have some bling, even if it's combining flat with gloss black, or adding something other than black to a mostly black frame.

All you black afficianados aren't helping me make my final decision on a new non-black bike purchase, which I want to complete by the end of the week.

My bike doesn't have paint and I really like it that way. The frame is nude or raw carbon, which happens to be black but the texture of the carbon resembles wood grain.

OK, more direct: you're making an ultimately regrettable mistake buying a blue/black/white combo frame. Why else would it be such a good deal? might as well be pepto-bismol pink (knowing some knucklehead is going to be offended because he/she likes that shade of pink).

Only color to which I am adverse is white. And, I've got a white C-40. I've got black, gold, silver and red as well.

I had a Litespeed Siena for a few years and got sick of looking at the "Litespeed" decals so I scraped them off if that counts.

Anyway, this is only my opinion. Highlights here and there always good to break up monotony but I think that if you want a design that you can stick with for the long haul and are worried about eventually growing tired of it then simpler is better. Doesn't mean you need to go all black though.

As per your original question though, I would steer clear from loud colors. My buddy has a yellow Corvette and he loved the color when he first got it but he hates it now - he wishes he got the black instead (lol - sorry for another color black ref. )

As for colors I don;t like from the get go... I don't like neon colors and I don't like pink. Even for a girl's bike I think pink is a little played out.

Personally I think the best looking bikes are white with all black components/decals. Simple and elegant.

I've rebuilt one in red and have one in blue and one in white. Built one for the wife in Burgundy that she lives very well (although she prefers powder pink). My Trek 370 rebuild for the wife will likely be in her favorite pink. My Raleigh rebuild will be Orange and Blue with a UF Gator somewhere on the frame. I may include a UCF Gold Knight on the bottom side of the BB. Go Gators!
