Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CAAD9 Dilema

I'm thinking about getting a CAAD9 because I'm finding my Cervelo Soloist Team that I bought off eBay to be a bit small. It was fine when I was using it as a TT only, but now it's a TT/Road and it's not a great fit as a road.... after a 3-4 hour ride my back and shoulders suffer.

I found a guy selling a '07 CAAD9 frame w/fork for $450 in my area. So I went to my LBS to test ride one. They have the same size '09 CAAD9 7 going for $799. So I thinking that I could buy the new CAAD9 7 and just sell the parts off it since I'm going to be using my SRAM components. I just need the frame, fork, and seatpost so everything else can go.

I'm just not sure about how much I could realistically get for the components and wheels. If I could get $350-400 I would be happy and it would be cheaper than buying the used frame with the added bonus of a valid warranty on the frame.

Should I just get the new C9-7 or not bother and just get the used frameset (I may be able to talk the guy down to $400).

I wouldn't think there would be a lot of demand for 8-speed Sora parts and the wheels aren't the greatest. With my CAAD9-6 junk (Tiagra and slightly better wheels), I had people offering me around $250 total for the stuff; $200 for group and $50 for wheels and tires. At the same time, I didn't try very hard to get good money for the parts, just casual, ``Hey, looking for X?''

If it's nine speed, maybe it will sell for decent bucks, 8 speed SORA is way too common and not bringing fast bucks unless you low-ball it.

You won't get what you're looking for w/ the Sora & those wheels. Just depends on how much the paint scheme & warranty are worth to you.

true, I was mainly worried about getting stuck with all these crappy components I can't unload or would never use.

Perhaps I can just use that as leverage to get the guy to bring his price down. He's been trying to sell it for a month and I'm the first person to contact him about it.... so we'll see

FWIW I sold the shimano wheels and cheapo maxxis tires that come on the CAAD9 5 for $180 on craigslist.

I decided not to give up my Soloist, if nothing else I will try to get the CAAD9 for a decent price and switch the Soloist back to TT.

It will probably take me awhile to build up the CAAD9, but I like the Soloist too much to part with it

If you get the CAAD9 w/Tiagra you can expect the following:

Shifters - 150
Wheels - 100
F+R Derailleurs - $40 total
Crank - $50
Brakes - $30
Cassette - $20

so you can get the frame and fork for $500-600 depending on the upfront price of the bike and how much the parts go for. I'm pretty sure the above numbers are somewhat accurate as I just parted out a Six13 equipped the same way and built it up with Rival

Keep in mind that you get a warranty with the frame and you'll have cables, housings, seatpost, stem, headset, bars, etc. after you part out the major components.

Not a bad deal. I was surprised at the value of the Tiagra shifters, but when I though about it you can't get replacement parts for Shimano shifters, and so if you had a 9sp shifter go out on you and didn't want a used shifter it's probably your cheapest option.

I got $130 + shipping for the wheels off the CAAD9 6
The last of my parts just sold on eBay today (Tiagra brakes), my actual breakdown is a bit different than above, but in short you can part out a CAAD9 6 or maybe even a 5, and have a frame w/fork for a bit more than eBay prices but with warranty and you can pick the color.

Just a bit of hassle listing/selling all the parts

Yeah, I'm swapping out the 105 (for Rival) and the wheels. I'm just pleasantly surprised at some of the $ you guys are getting for this stuff.

Ebay will take their cut, and I think you'll have an easier time with the 105 stuff. With the Tiagra stuff I got decent money for the wheels and the shifters. Based on the number of watchers/bids there wasn't much interest in the derailleurs, cassette, etc. If you do part it out make sure you come up with accurate shipping since it's easy to underestimate, especially with increased shipping costs.

I checked "completed auctions" before buying the actual bike, and figured as long as I was in the ballpark of the other auctions I could do the Rival build reasonably. Unfortunately Cannondale didn't have the bike I wanted in my size, and even getting the Tiagra was a special order as none of the shops had it. In the end though I think it was worth the hassle, I built up a nice bike relatively cheaply and am happy with the components.
