Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fantastic post - this one and Botto's are amazing. Sounds like you planned it right getting to the velodrome in time. A few years ago when I was there we were flying by the seat of our pants with a map and trying to figure out the route as we went along. Saw one pave section and two road sections and missed getting into the velodrome by a few minutes.

Your lucky timing with Boonen coming into the clubhouse was perfect!

Great thread, thanks for posting the pictures! I enjoyed all of the pictures, but especially the ones of the Koppenberg and the Muur.

Are you sure he was serious? Was it "just" a portion, or the whole thing?

Every time I get fed up with BF, a thread like this (and Botto's) comes along and restores my faith in humanity.

Question: I'm a freelance translator and cycling enthusiast who could theoretically work from anywhere with an internet hookup. I got a wife, no kids. My wife and I like living in Ontario (Canada), but like Europe as well. So why wouldn't I want to live in a place like Belgium? Or France? Eh?

Get out of Ontario and get over there! We did it a few years ago (and are now back in ON) and didn't regret a minute. Wish I could be back in Europe almost daily...

Hi Bruce,

Another great photo thread.

Between you and botto, I get a better feel of the ambiance of the Spring Classics than I get from the cycling web sites.

Keep shooting and posting.

Another cool part of the trip was meeting the head north american rep for Sram (who was staying in the same hotel with his lovely wife Ann). We sat and talked inane bike stuff for almost an hour one morning. The guy has forgotten more about bikes than I'll ever know. He gave me some really interesting insight into the business. I did learn a new and improved (lighter) Force group is on the way.

That would be quite cool. He must be pretty pleased with the quick ascent of SRAM in the pro ranks.
