The "Pieced it together myself" thread...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is the BMC SLC-01 I've spent the last few months building up.

The 2008 frame is a warranty replacement for a 2007 frame I purchased on closeout last year through Ebay. I also grabbed all of the SRAM Red group piece by piece over ebay, gradually replacing the Force stuff that came on it originally. The Negative Gravity brakes, Selle Italia SLR Gel Flow team edition saddle, 3T Doric LTD seatpost and KCNC skewers were also Ebay purchases.

The Easton EC90 SLX wheels came from Bonktown. 3T ARX stem and 3T Rotundo Team bar from an online retailer, Conti sprinter tubulars from Probikekit. Arundel cages from my LBS.

They are known as "butterfly" shifters by SunTour. I think their formal name was "command" shifters. They are a real awesome piece of kit, actually I've got the whole group on that bike. They shift super solid and fast.

Built her up at the end of last summer. Still paying it off but have a new job so that shouldn't take much longer. Frame, fork, stem, and SRAM Force stuff was all ebay and the rest was pretty much PBK. I love it and that's all that really matters. In fact, I think it's time to go ride it right now.

Here's the Colnago I built up many years ago, and then changed recently the stem, bars, and wheels.

Any my wife's Serotta, again, from about 10 years ago with some recent updates for fit:

The squirrel that witnessed the whole thing, I shot in the ditch. But scrapes on the saddle and pedal say otherwise. The bike didn't explode, so he's partially correct.

Gorgeous. Needs white saddle and bar tape for otherworldliness. Sweet wheels.

Ironic. I personally think the tacky/sticky/pleather tape is possibly the best performance adding feature of the bike. It has a sticky backing so it won't creep on the bars, and the grip is excellent.

Well, maybe after the compact bend of the WCS bars. Those add considerably to the fit and handling too.

The main reason to build a bike rather than buy one, is to get total control over every component, including size and color. I know I saved some by building, but I also saved a bunch more by not having to swap parts to get it how I want it.

Plus, it's the only bike exactly like it in NYC, and possibly in the world. ;-)

Well, I'm a utilitarian so I can respect function over form, but we obviously differ. I hate tape with adhesive, know how to wrap nonadhesive tape so it doesn't creep, and find cork or synthetic cork to be plenty grippy for even my sweaty hands in CA August.
