Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

See a doc (you already are). See a bike fitter. Search and look, but find the right saddle for that bike.

This happens to me fairly regular after long rides. Different sports drinks also tend to make it better or worse.

Youre not the only person this happens to.

I've gotten not the burning sensation when peeing but I've gotten shooting pains after test riding my bike while wearing regular non-bike underwear briefs.

The bike has a Serfas Performax RX saddle which is split or bisected along its length. Like this:

When I've ridden the same bike with bike shorts, no shooting pains.

So is your saddle the split type?

I did a ride from Brooklyn to White Plains, and my nether region was very sore. Today, I did a ride from Brooklyn to Hoboken via Teaneck (and the hill in Ridgefield), and not only was my nether region sore (though not as badly), it burned when I went to pee. The first time I tried was very bad, but this was shortly after I stopped riding the first time. When I got home, it still burned, but much less.

I should add that my "boys" went numb after almost every ride that was 20+ miles.

I'm going to see the guys tonight or tomorrow morning about this, but what do you guys think could be the issue? I have tried the following:
  • Adjusted my seatpost height; no solutions.
  • Adjusted my saddle position; slightly better, but not completely.
  • Swapped my seat and seatpost; slightly better, but now my urine is on fire.

All advice will be very much appreciated.
Sounds like a urinary tract infection or epididymitis--or worse, prostatitis (only worse because of how it's treated). It might need antibiotics. Go see a doc, then worry about the fit.

I probably should note that I dont have any numbness and never have and the burning only occurs for me immediately after the ride, the first time I urinate. After that, Im fine. So we may not have the same thing going on.

Ive tried different saddles, doesnt seem to make much difference. Its probably a pressure thing. The Adamo might be better, I dunno.. one of the guys I ride with a lot was having some nether region problems and the Adamo worked wonders for him. I just hate to keep spending money on saddles because I always end up back on the Fly.

The Forte does. I'll try it again and see.

I'm not one to contest a doctor, but wouldn't other symptoms happen before burning sensations if it were a UTI? BTW, the burning sensations have minimized significantly by now. It's just a bit numb, but that goes away after a day or so.

I drank Vitaminwater for the first time in about a year, but I hardly think this would do anything.

Not necessarily. The burning may also be a sign of some urethral trauma if it's getting better, but the last thing you want is a smoldering infection or something like that.

Of course, when these problems come up I call my colleagues on the Stream Team (AKA Urologists) because it's not my area of expertise... I still think it's worth having someone take a look.

As for riding, I'd stop completely for a good week, then work on dialing your fit in. Try to replicate your old bike as much as you can, and that would seem like the fix...

My guess would be that the top tube or stem of the the new bike makes a longer reach than your Trek, this causing you roll your weight onto those areas. I wouldn't take long rides until you figure this out. Either that, or you had a different saddle position/tilt on the Trek. I seem to recall you saying that you're married, so I'm guessing (hoping) that you're not banging random broads on the side, or that your wife isn't getting friendly with the UPS driver.

I will listen to your advice. Which kind of sucks, since I was going to ride my first century for the year this Saturday. I'm visiting my shop tomorrow to ask them about the fit, and am going to schedule an appt with my physician, hopefully for next week (since tomorrow would be highly unlikely).

Question: can I still use the gym bike for training? I didnt' have any saddle issues with that (mostly because it's designed to put riders in the most non-realistic position as possible).

Listen to Doc's advice and stay off the bike. I had a related issue but believe is was due to heightened not impeded flow based upon all the cardio I was doing. I had an erection for more than 4 hours and was advised to see my doctor. BTW...you can do the century...but I would do it all standing and not sit down.

The cause of your symptoms appears to be pressure on the urethra. It is not likely a UTI or you would have symptoms all the time. You do need to keep after it until you get it resolved because long term damage like that could lead to a stricture, as noted in the above post. Have you tried a saddle with a cut-out? The urethra is basically a midline structure so that might help. Sounds like you are sitting tilted too far forward, in other words too much on your hands and not enough on your sit bones. If you are sitting properly all you trunk weight will be born on your sit bones(aka pubic rami) and not on your urethra. Good luck.

Hydrate well, but not excessively. You obviously have a bike fit problem that has to be sorted out.

But I'm thinking poor recent diet can also cause this, just the timing of the burning is causing you to focus only on saddle fit & length of rides. Also as others have humorously pointed out, we don't know what exactly you were up to in the nights before

In any case see a doc ASAP.
