Riding with fasties

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Riding with fasties

I'm trying to ride with some people faster than me, they always drop me. How do I keep up with them, rocket pack?

Drope the hammer, dial it up to 400W and hope you don't end up with someone's wheel all up in your ass?

Grab seatpost / secret training / major drafting / work on aero position / buy lighter bike.

I've tried all of the above (save the last one) in my time ...

Two rules:

1) STICK ON THAT WHEEL! Don't let a gap form, or you're done.

2) If you can't do #1, try to memorize the road names or bring a GPS...

Depends on how nice the fast guys are but when I first started riding with guys that were faster than I was, they were cool with me not taking as long or as many pulls.

Assuming the faster ppl are in front of you when the laxative hits, this could be a terrible, terrible winning idea.

1. Suck wheel
2. Intervals
3. Find a slower group or resign yourself to get dropped until you get stronger (the only problem is your friends will probably keep getting stronger too).
4. Steroids/Epo (at your own risk)

edit: it just occurred to me that this is a parody thread. Unprecedented on BF.

Nevermind.

1) wheel suck.
2) pick your wheel carefully (get behind someone big and smooth)
3) don't waste energy closing gaps that others will close for you, or will close themselves.
4) be smooth, staying off the brakes, and avoiding unecessary accelerations. He who coasts the mosts and uses brakes the least, uses the least energy.
5) anticipate accelerations, and start accelerating gradually so you don't have to pound it when things pick up such as out of corners.
6) be at the front of the group on hills, and gradually roll to the back ascending, so you climb a tad slower, using less energy but stay in contact.

7) let slight gaps develop downhill so you roll into the them at the bottom and have added momentum going up the next rise.

8) let slight gaps develop going into turns, and roll into them around the turn so you don't have to brake and accelerate.

9) pull through, but immediately pull of when you've cleared the retreating wheel.

10) attack on the flats just before a hill so you get a lead that you give back on the hill but stay in contact.

11) let a little gap develop climbing if you know you can roll up the group on the descent.

Basically be smooth and opportunistic.

Left off, 12) find ways to drift to the back of the line without taking a turn, such as drifting to the back at stop lights, stop signs.
