Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cevelo vs Trek Madone???

Hi,

I just got back from a bike shop yesterday. Initially, I was asking the bike sales rep about the Madone 5.2, but as i was waiting, I learned about Cevelo. I would like to know what everyone think of Cevelo compare to the madone? and which Cevelo model is comparable to the Madone 5.2? Please let me know what you think. Thanks a lot.

Depending on which 5.2 you are referring to, the Pro fit or Performance fit would be the first step in figuring out which Cervelo would be comparable. The new S2 with the Ultegra SL would probably be comparable in both price and performance to the Pro fit. The RS would probably be comparable price wise to the Performance fit but the R3 would probably be closer performance wise. Just my .02 having test ridden all but the RS and S2 a couple of months ago myself...

Without question, buy the Trek. Cervelos are the bicycle equivalent of a corvette for ponchy mid aged poseurs...that is if Canada made a car.

Buy the one that fits you the best and you prefer after an in-depth test ride.

At the end of the day, the one that "sings" to you is the one you'll ride the most. Isn't that the point of it all?

Frankly, it's arguable that every $5K+ bike is Poser Worthy.

As if every shlub on a Madone has the legs to back it up.

Cervelos don't sing.

I don't own either but I heard that Trek has a great warranty. If the frame fails, Trek will send you a new frame without many questions.

frame failure on a $5k bike is unlikely. if it did fail, i am pretty sure you could get it replaced at no cost, no matter the manufacturer.

check that, frame failure is unlikely, period. (cue random examples). The point is unless you f up your bike, it's reasonable to expect the manufacturer to stand behind their product.

use the search function, look up my posts on cervelo R3 and Madone 5.2.

summary, both great bikes that you'll never know the difference between when they're under you.

I had a guy at a bike shop tell me once that when he used to worked for Specialized and saw warranties refused even when it was a manufacturing defect. He told me that he once saw a mountain bike with a defective rear triangle where the tire rubbed against the seat tube and Specialized refused the warranty.

However, he could have been BSing me because he didn't want to me go to another shop and buy a Specialized. He is the only one that I have ever heard say a bad thing about Specialized.

Mostly. Not all manufacturers have lifetime warranties to the original owner, but the major companies do. Cervelo does.

If you had both, pick the one you'd choose to ride every day. There's really no appreciable difference.
