Second Positive for Tyler Hamilton leads to Retirement

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you are saying he is handling his depression as best he can, I disagree. He should have gone back to his doctor and let him supervise his medication and treatment. In addition, it was incumbent on Tyler, and he owed it to the sport, to show he is clean and remain clean, given his history. He could have retired as a reformed doper, and it would have been better for the sport and its image. He let all of cycling down.

If you are saying he is handling the revelations as best he can by retiring immediately and admitting his wrongs, the I agree with you.

it's easy to give advice when you're on the outside, looking in.

There are more anti-depressants these days than you can shake a stick at. Off the top of my head--and I'm a surgeon--I can think of:

Prozac
Zoloft
Paxil
Effexor
Remeron
Wellbutrin
Zyprexa
St John's Wort (1st-line rx in europe)

To say that he was out of established prescription options doesn't make sense.

I get that he's been through a lot and I do feel sorry for him about that, but he really did bring it on himself this time.

I don't remember them off the top of my head, and the only stories I've heard were about folks on other teams. They were the usual stories told in passing, or allusions made to people who remain nameless. I'm nowhere near connected enough to have a by-name list. I was merely a schmuck cat 4 hearing stories when the cool kids were around.

What are you talking about? Trek's entire marketing plan assures the world that anyone can be Lance if they purchase a Madone road bike.

And it's working.

I suppose he won't be defending his US RR Champ jersey, then. Suddenly that feel-good story doesn't feel so good.

Hello?

At the time he bought the supplement, which is marketed under the brand name Mitamins Advanced Formula for Depression, Hamilton was in a "desperate" emotional state triggered when he went off his prescription medication cold turkey, he said.
Doing non-sensical sh*t is what depressed/bi-polar/whatever people do. it's the nature of the beast. Simply telling them 'hey, feel different...act different' and actually expecting them to do just that when they're not on their medication unrealistic, unsympathetic and asinine, I would expect YOU of all people to be more understanding. Clearly you have never been around someone in that condition for any length of time.

Having said that, I agree Tyler just needs to go away and stay away.

All I know is he had to be on some type of mind bending narcotics to win that stage of the tour with a broken collarbone...that was some serious stones.

What's asinine is you calling anything I've written in this thread a call to just "hey, feel different...act different." I never said that. And yes, I've had both patients and co-workers who have struggled with depression, so save the sermon.

Having said that, I agree Tyler just needs to go away and stay away.
Well, at least we agree on something.

Should have taken cod liver oil to address the underlying deficiency that is probably at the root of his depression.

In any case, this recent thing isn't really important as he was walking around before with someone else's blood in him. I'm surprised that pros don't fake bad car accidents and say they got a transfusion for blood loss.

It sounds like he didn't care would be positive or found out and just didn't care. Doesn't seem like he wants to race anymore with his past and RL issues. Is he an idiot for taking it? If he still wanted to race and win-- yes, but he doesn't and wanted out, so who care?

If I could afford it, and if I weren't riding a bike because it makes me feel healthier, I'd be doping. And I'd be crushing you all with no pangs of guilt.

But you don't have to worry about it. I'm too poor and of course, my body is a Temple.
