Training on different types of bikes

Anyone else ride a classic srop bar road bike on weekends but spend time hefting a hybrid or MTB around to built strength etc.?

I have done this and found that it burns fat faster and builds stamina and muscle fairly quickly.

I rode what I have available...sometimes it's a mountain bike, sometimes and old heavy road bike and sometimes a modern System Six...whatever type of workout that I'm looking to do, I do, no matter the bike...it is my perception that the only difference is miles per hour...perhaps I do benefit "more" when riding the heavier bikes; I don't know.

I find that my road bike is much more comfortable than my mountain bike, so will be able to ride much more and get more excercise.

I do commute on a mountain bike. I just switched the knobbly tires out for slicks but have not ridden on them yet.

The only thing that kind off worked well for me was mixing track and road. Anything else was just for kicks, or because I had every decent road bike under construction that I took out the hybrid.

If you're working as hard as you can, it doesn't matter what bike you're on. The difference will only be how fast you are going from that effort.

Slight position changes may work different muscles more, but you can get that by standing on hills, or other position changes anyway.

Heavier bikes don't make you faster just slower when your on them. If you want to get faster you need to put in more effort on what ever type of bike your on.

Road bike on the weekend, hybrid for commuting on weekdays. I don't do it to build strength, I do it so my road bike doesn't get stolen. Riding the road bike all the time would probably be better for training purposes (I'd get to ride in the drops more than 2 days a week).

The extra few pounds of a hybrid or MTB aren't going to be a huge contributor to strength training. Maybe it's just that you're riding more, and as a result you're getting stronger?

Almost every inch of "base" miles I do are on a touring bike. It's very comfy.

riding in dirt, gravel, slush, snow, ice and mud is not the same as riding on paved road and it doesn't make you faster or stronger, it just lets you get used to different handling characteristics of the terrain and bike type.

if you really want to, attach a parachute or car tyre to your harness and ride at the same speed you would on your road bike.

I have 2 road bikes, one an '07 CAAD9 105 equipped and the other an '82 Colnago Campy NR/SR mix. Unless the course is pretty hilly (allowing use of some easier hill climbing gears on the CAAD9) not much difference in perceived effort or avg speed.
