Someone talk me out of it...

So I bought a new bike last year and love it, but I think it's that time of year where the "new gizmo" itch kicks in and I saw a nice 08 Scott CR1 Pro that has caught my eye. I test rode it last year and liked the more aggressive geometry compared to my Orbea but went with the Orbea because it was a good mix of both. I don't need it obviously but it would be nice, except for incurring the wrath of my wife....oh what to do?

What does need got to do with buying a new bike?

Btw what size is your Onix?

RazorWind 04-21-09 10:17 AM

Look for a bike that does more for you than "it would be nice." I can't imagine incurring the wrath of the wife unless the bike just screams "You can't live without me!" at you.

Edit: For instance, a bike where you get to build it up from the frame would be worth the cost to me, but buying another bike just because seems like a recipe for having a pile of bikes in the garage that I don't ride much anyway.

Just say "no".

If you are going to get another CF bike, get something that blows away the Orbea (Prince, 'Nago EPS in tacky color of choice, Addict, Parlee, etc.).

If you really want another ride, I vote custom/vintage steel or Ti.

What wheels do you run on a daily basis? The 5 minutes I save on my 80 mile rides plus the bling factor justify my new wheels...

Think about the total cost of the bike. Sticker price plus half of everything you own.

I've been tossing around the idea of getting a good frame and building it up slowly since I already have a bike, and what I've been meaning to do is sell the Bianchi and getting a good second bike that I would rotate so there would be no bike just sitting around.

I'm trying to keep the price point down because any major purchase would be a tough sell, and it's hard to argue the "well what's wrong with the one you have?" counter. I've been looking through e-bay for Ti frames and is the one option I find really interesting because I can spread the price point over time rather than on big expenditure.

I'm running Williams 19s and they've been really good. What's nice about the Scott is that it comes with Ksyriums rather than the usual Shimano RS10 that came on my Orbea so no wheel or component upgrades (full Ultegra).

The irony; might as well go Di2 and Lightweights then. I'm sure his wife will love it...

My wife works in Westwood so we went into Westwood cycles on Saturday where I saw a Giant they have there with Di2 on it so I got to try out the shifting (in the store). $13k for the bike and the sales guy and I were joking about the whole "getting it past the wife" schtick, she laughed but there is no way I was going home with that kind of bike.

So just upgrade stuff. Ceramic bearings are the new thing I hear.

I'm thinking of upgrading my seatpost bearings to ceramic. I hear that's good for at least 100 watts over a 25k time trial. :)

Seriously though, ceramic bearings (bottom bracket and wheel) and a new wheelset certainly are upgrades worth considering. That's a bike I'd consider worth keeping and modifying.

If you get another bike, consider adding capability. A mountain bike, a cyclocross bike, a TT bike... something that adds another element to the quiver.

Well she already took my car since she's pretty much the only person who drives it, I only drive on the weekends.

Have you tried just buying a new bike and just showing up at home: "Check it out babe, what do you think? You can hang your clothes on it when I'm not using it".

:P

I have to admit this has been the one annoying factor of married life, I can understand purchases that would affect your ability to save or pay your bills but if it doesn't affect either there shouldn't be a problem. She hasn't given me grief over the things I purchased recently since they've been for repairs or adjusting fit, so she's eased up...lol. She's great but when it comes to splurging yeesh.
