Fit Issue? Back Tightness after Climbing

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wow, what a spirited discussion!

I'll just add my two cents and leave it at that.

Long climbs in the saddle work my lower back muscles pretty hard. If I stay in the saddle for an entire climb of 2 hours, my lower back is toast.

I make a habit of getting out of the saddle every 5 minutes or so, for 30 pedal strokes. It helps take the strain off my back, lets me use some different muscles, and keeps my butt from going numb.

I agree with this... but the issue here is that stabilizing your torso is a secondary effect... these muscles are not being stressed that hard (or at least shouldn't be). Like other muscles that you utilize, these will get stronger when you use them. If weakness of these core muscles was the cause of the problem then the pain would go away when they *naturally* get stronger from use. In my case and a majority of riders who suffer from back pain, the situation does not get better with time at all... and the reason is because there is some other fundamental problem.

That's funny. How come my abs and obliques never ever become tired or sore while cycling? Obviously they are plenty strong for what I am doing... so why make them stronger?

Maybe more than two trips around the block would wear you out more.

The OP was looking for advice from someone(s) who could direct their comments to HIS issue. Your mileage (literally) may vary.

Yeah, mine are in good shape too. But I rode about 25,000 miles last year. I work like crazy on core strength in the off season.

I love this, "you're wrong because this does not apply to me" stuff.

So does this give me an excuse to go out and get a better bike with a professional fit? (Need a decent excuse for the wife.)

Yes...

Go to Fit Werx...

If she questions it, tell her you can't take the trash out because your back hurts...
