Trek 1000/Trek 1.2 equivalents
Hi,
I'm just getting into road cycling and have been researching some entry level road bikes. I'm fairly sure they have discontinued the Trek 1000 so I've been looking into a Trek 1.2. Does anyone know of some equivalent bikes made by Specialized, Giant or Cannondale (or any other reputable brands)?
Thanks!

If you are looking for a compact race frame, Specialized makes the Allez. Which is an all aluminum frame, available with Shimano Sora/Tiagra mix or Shimano 105 components. The prices range from the upper 800's to mid 1500's.

I have found that for a comparable frame (e.g. aluminum with carbon stays), Trek's have poorer groupsets than other brands... and often, a higher price.

I bought a Raleigh Grand Prix this spring (2008 model, last year they were made). Aluminum frame, carbon fork, 10 speed, 105 w/Ultegra RD, $900.00. I really like it so far.

Check the $750 bike thread... The Trek 1.2 is the entry-level Trek road bike. Go to the website of some bike manufacturers and look at their base road bike and you'll have yourself a good list of entry-level Trek 1.2 equivalents.
Off-brands will have some no-name parts but higher Shimano groupsets.

In my opinion, you can get a much better value getting a Giant Defy 3, Specialized Allez or Cannondale CAAD9 than getting a Trek 1.2. Their choices of components for that frame are not very good at that price; their rear derailleur is the lowest class derailleur that you can get right now, and I've heard that it performs poorly compared to entry-level groupsets (Sora, Tiagra).
I have a Trek 1000, and while it's a great bike, it's overpriced.
Good luck!
