Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think we need an '09 CAAD9 club...

It's really just occurred to me how many people have just gotten '09 CAAD9s or are waiting on them like me (humongous, fbxcore, a few others I forget at the moment)...I think we need a sub forum for '09 CAAD9 discussions

But on a serious note, I'm curious how much of this CAAD9 fervor is because of the impending off-shoring of the frame production? I know for me it was definitely a factor as I was planning on riding my Fuji for another year and upgrading to something nicer next year. Given a choice I'd rather have the domestically produced frame, so I did it early.

Maybe other manufacturers should take note and bring some frame production back to the US...maybe that's a competitive marketing edge?

I actually had ordered mine a few days before that whole notice about domestic production shipping overseas came out, more incentive to try to not crash it I guess... I was in at the lbs on sunday and they told me 2 more weeks, I'm just hoping they're right...I have all my other stuff bought/ordered already and am really itching to get out there and ride the hell out of it before I have to go back home from school.

+1 on CAAD9 sub-forums

I was going to get a Trek 2.1, but after a test ride on both I felt like the CAAD9 was a bit more 'hardcore roadie'. Plus it looked more classy. Oh, and I dropped carbon with it! w00t!

It was a factor for me, although not an end-all be-all. More like an opportunity. The honest truth is I really need to lose about 50 more pounds and get in generally better shape before getting another bike of any kind, and yes, if Cannondale frame production wasn't moving overseas then I would have held off for sure. As it was, the LBS gal tried to tell me prices were going up (she hadn't seen the new Cannondale website updates, and so appeared to know nothing of the CAAD9 7/6/5 versus Tiagra compact/triple, 105 compact/triple and Ultegra compact versions. I think she said the Tiagra compact was $1400 - if so that had to be a misunderstanding, I hope! At any rate, she said it would be "June, July, maybe August." But they had a 2008 CAAD9-7 in Patriot Blue, which I like, in 52cm, my size, in stock at the Cannondale warehouse. And of course, its American made. Soooo.....I went ahead and had her order it. $980.....damn money grubbers I really hope I can get them to throw in something when I finally get it paid off in about 3 months or so (and better yet, down to 250ish or as close to it by then).

So yeah, I admit it - made in the USA is a nice thing sometimes

I picked mine up last weekend, My bike breaking and the over seas factor made me buy it sooner than planned. They are also selling like hotcakes around here and I didnt want to be stuck waiting for weeks. Had my first crit race on it yesterday, and the bike definatly lives up to the hype.

I'm all for US goods, but this holiness of CAAD9 actually bothers me. No doubt, it's a great bike, but there are a lot of other great bikes out there that get a much less biased treatment - often because of their offshore carbon-fibre roots. It's like on these forums, someone yells CAAD9, and then everyone's eyes glaze over - and if you dare criticize any of it, you get flamed as being unamerican.

I do like the idea of subforums for popular bikes, though. Even though it would be unfair to all the other great bikes out there that don't have their own forums.

It seemed pretty tongue in cheek from the get go. It has been interesting where it went though. BF is funny that way

I wouldn't mind picking one up one day to try the cool aid. It will have to be a used frame set though. No money in the bike budget for this year other than keeping the current rides running. Oh well.

I'd like to peal off those "made in USA" decals, if I wasn't so lazy.

We don't need an entire subforum, just a thread to round all those Caad 9's up!

So who's going to open the topic? How about : "The all Inclusive Mega Caad 9 thread"

And not a whine and complain thread, just all things happy and Caad

I mean, it'll help because someone is always starting a new Caad thread, now we'll have a home...

production overseas. pretty clever

How has off-shoring affected any of our buying habits? It's increased our demand for lower cost products manufactured elsewhere. If it didn't, televisions, furniture, textiles, computers, etc etc etc would still be manufactured in the US. Americans love to buy American, but we tend to draw the line when it comes down to cost. Most would just as soon buy a bedroom set made in <insert foreign country here> than pay an additional 30% for something of quality still made in the US.
The Caad9 will fall prey to the same trap, people will continue to buy no matter where it's made, as long as the price is right and it's still a quality frame. If nothing else, maybe they can upgrade the components and wheels for something close to what they used to have on previous versions of the bike.
It's surprising Cannondale continued manufacturing Caads in the US for as long as they did. But not a surprise to move manufacturing when they were bought out by Dorel.
