Have you ever rode injured even though you knew you shouldn't?

This weekend in New England the weather is going to be dry and in the low 80s for the first time this year. Awesome biking weather. Should be out there both Saturday and Sunday enjoying the ride. Well, except for one small problem. I tweaked my left knee last rainy weekend on the trainer and it's just not feeling right. Not sure what I did, but it's swollen above the knee cap towards the inside of my leg. It doesn't hurt, but it's visibly swollen and it feels tight under the swelling. Like the tendon has stiffened up or something. :(

Ok, I know the best thing is to stay off of it and don't ride until it feels better, but DAMMIT, I want to ride this weekend. Yes, I know pushing it will lead to worse problems. Getting old sucks. Stupid injury.

Has anyone rode with a similiar issue anyway?

Nope and I wouldn't either especially if there's swelling. I'm in a similar situation after having whacked my pinky toe against a chair the other night, it got swollen and is a little bruised. My wife kept saying it might be broken but it doesn't hurt that much and I can move it around a bit. I went to work the next day and walking wasn't pleasant, so I'm going to wait a bit before getting back on the bike.

Sure, and run injured, and climbed injured.... running injured left me with permanent knee damage, and i can never run again. don't do it.

Stay off the leg and don't ride no matter what. Sit on a park bench somewhere and watch the babes walk by instead.

This is thursday. I'd ice it, rest it. By saturday if the swellings down, and you feel ok, I'd go for an easy low gear spin. If it hurts stop, If it doesn't spin for an hour.

Then see how you feel Sunday, and play it be ear.

If its still swollen by Monday, I'd see a doctor.

Open Reduction Internal Fixation of my right femur. I'm wasn't supposed to cycle for 4 months or some such thing. I did a metric century after about 6 weeks with some friends. I took it very easy, but it was probably stupid. Nonetheless, it healed fine and it's been 20 years with no trouble. Still got a 16" steel rod (did I just say that??) and a few screws to prove it.

Riding with a broken rib right now...:thumb:

Knee issues just take a day or two off, should clear up and wont bother you while riding. Nothing worse then having a nagging pain while out on a nice day or riding. I normally have to do this after a rough Sunday night indoor soccer game, were the legs can sometimes get messed up being getting slide tackled by people that are horrible at it.

That said for colds, take the time off. 3 weeks ago I had a cold but decided to keep riding as I had a race coming up. In just 1 hour ride on a Tuesday I made everything 100% worse, leading me to race with bronchitis (= crappy finish due to not being able to breath due to illness) and being sick up until last week.

Racing is not a recommended medication for colds I guess.

"Have you ever rode injured even though you knew you shouldn't?"

Unfortunately yes. Two times semi recently. Once on a ride, about 20 miles from my home, I felt some searing pain in my hamstring so I immediately turned around. The next 20 miles were really painful and I knew I shouldn't have been pedaling.

Then, one time I promised a friend I would help out at his cycling charity event. Even though I had a torn hamstring I pedaled 20 VERY SLOW AND EASY miles. But it was for a good cause and I pedaled so slow I don't think I did any additional damage.

I'm riding with a possible issue in my urethral area. This hasn't been confirmed, but I should have checked it.

Myfirsttrek 04-23-09 04:25 PM

Yes, just this past Tuesday. My knee pain has come back fully. Going to see a doc tomorrow..

Zen Cyclery 04-23-09 04:44 PM

I think any good rider is guilty of that.

Yes, but it was to qualify for a quadrennial event I might not ever have had the chance to return to. I finished the ride and then took care of the injury in the 2 month period before big the event.

Several years back I fell warming up for a metric century, reached out before i could stop myself to stop myself with my arm. SHoulder felt like someone had stuck an ice pick in it, skinned up my knee pretty well. Knew I shouldn't but went ahead and rode the ride. Ended up a torn labrum with shoulder surgery 6 weeks later. Not that the ride had anything to do with that, don't think it made things worse, just hurt like heck whilst doing it.

CrimsonKarter21 04-23-09 07:28 PM

I'm racing this Sunday with two broken toes in my left foot.

I also crashed once last year during a group rain ride after falling into a pothole, tore up my whole right side and beat everyone in a city limit sprint 10 miles later.

Then another time after sliding on a bricked turn, I ate it and finished the ride with my right side coverd in blood and my shorts torn.

Lucky07 04-23-09 09:02 PM

I've done it, but I certainly don't condone it. Rode with massive road rash, hamstring pulls & various illnesses. I could have just cross-trained & not worked the injured part of my body.

The craziest thing was doing a 150 mile paceline ride with a sprained thumb. That was dumb. Miraculously, I remember enjoying that ride.

JimF22003 04-24-09 01:40 AM

Separated my shoulder in a crash coming off a mountain. Dr. told me not to ride for 3 weeks. I waited 5 days. I think it depends on the injury. Mine was OK as long as I stayed out of the drops and didn't pull up on the bars too much when standing.

And if I avoided crashing again.

Chaderotti 04-27-09 12:44 PM

Yep... now my right knee is shot for life.

Red Rider 04-27-09 02:38 PM

Yes.

Crashed at mile 51 of a century and banged my knee so that it swelled and broke my wrist. I didn't know it was broken, thought it was sprained, so after checking the bike for damage (there was a scratch on the downtube) I got back on and rode another 57 miles. If I'd known it was broken at the time I'd not have ridden.

Good luck with your knee.

mjdwyer23 04-27-09 06:46 PM

Yes. I was committed to climbing the Grand Teton last summer and broke my ankle 6 weeks before the date. I couldn't climb, hike, or run to train so I had to bike.

CrimsonKarter21 04-27-09 07:08 PM

I raced yesterday with a broken toe.
I completed one of the most taxing rides of my life today.
I also crashed 3 miles into a 24 mile long MTB race where the end of my bar slapped my left knee and bruised a tendon badly. I finished the last 5 miles of the first lap on one leg: up and along some pretty tricky terrain, but didn't finish the race.

mloywhite 04-27-09 07:40 PM

Lots of times with shoulder problems, too soon after surgery, but never with a leg injury. Its pretty easy to compensate with an arm, nothing like a leg injury. I will probably be doing it again at the end of next week, I am having my 4th surgery on my left shoulder next Wednesday.
